Stuart Damon checks back in to GH

Another Quartermaine will return to General Hospital by the end of the summer. Stuart Damon will reprise the role of Alan Quartermaine, but the show is keeping mum on whether or not Alan will be alive or dead. Damon originated the role of Alan in 1977.

Another member of General Hospital's Quartermaine family is headed back to the canvas -- though exactly how remains a closely guarded secret. Emmy winner Stuart Damon (Alan Quartermaine) will return to GH in September.

General Hospital's newly installed head writer, Garin Wolf, has made no secret of his belief that the show needed to bring back its core families and key characters. In the past several weeks, the ABC soap has announced that another long-time vet, Leslie Charleson (Monica Quartermaine), would be headed back to the show. Fan fave Robin Christopher (Skye Quartermaine) is also set to return.

Damon's return, however, presents more of a challenge. In 2006, just as he was about to celebrate his 30th anniversary with the ABC soap, Damon was released from the show and his character was killed off. As expected, fans were upset by the decision. The show relented and brought Damon back for a short-term run where his character appeared in visions as Tracy Quartermaine's "conscience."

Despite his backburner status over his final years with General Hospital, Damon remained popular with fans and drew critical acclaim throughout his tenure with General Hospital. Damon earned a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 1999. He garnered additional nominations in the same category in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1991, 1996, and 1999.

After leaving General Hospital, Damon went on to appear in a recurring capacity as bad guy Ralph Manzo on As the World Turns in 2009, and again in August 2010. Also in 2010, Damon took on the role of Governor Jim Ford on Days of our Lives.

Damon returns to the GH studio next week. A first airdate has not yet been announced.
