General Hospital actors inspire fans to raise impressive sum for cancer research

With the help of generous daytime fans, General Hospital just raised a whopping $50,000 for cancer research in honor of September Cancer Awareness Month.

General Hospital's Port Charles might not be able to boast a lot of feel-good moments, with the way the town's residents find themselves in the midst of more maladies and tragedies than celebratory moments. But the same can't be said for the show itself, especially following a successful fan event held this past weekend in Philadelphia.

GH cast members Tamara Braun (Kim Nero), Donnell Turner (Curtis Ashford), Eden McCoy (Josslyn Jacks), Wes Ramsey (Peter August), and William DeVry (Julian Jerome) met with fans at Helium Comedy Club for photos, autographs, a hilarious Q&A, and -- more importantly -- to raise funds for The Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation in honor of September Cancer Awareness Month. And they succeeded in raising a whopping $50,000.

Ovarian Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women today and kills approximately 15,000 each year. Early detection and prevention is what can make the difference in a better prognosis and higher chance of beating the disease. As a Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation Ambassador and passionate advocate, DeVry helped to disperse this information by encouraging fans to share stories and spread the word through their social media platforms and by involving local news and print media in promoting ovarian cancer awareness.

McCoy is also a passionate advocate of cancer awareness, and she made sure to stress awareness and education to the fan event audience.

"If affects all women equally and doesn't care if we're rich or poor, famous or not," she says. "We all have the same need for cancer education and emotional support if we're diagnosed. And the more we talk about it, and the more information that's out there, maybe it can be a little less scary."

The Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization created in memory of Sandy Rollman, who passed away from the disease in 2000. Their objective is supporting and advocating cancer warriors and achieving "a world without ovarian cancer."
