"Finally! I can now say I'm so excited to be @GeneralHospital," Budig exclaimed on Twitter. "Thank you all for your support!"
The character has been in a coma since May, but Hayden will soon be making a grand reentrance onto the canvas -- and the return will be lengthy, because Budig is on contract this time around.
"I was surprised!" the Kentucky native enthuses in an interview with Soap Opera Digest of executive producer Frank Valentini asking her back to the show. "I thought I came in and I did my job, and that was all that I was meant to do -- come in, cause some trouble and leave."
Fortunately for all involved, she was dead wrong about that. And she's excited to be back at work on the GH set. "I love being there and I am working with a great bunch of people."
In June, Jean Passanante, who had not yet been named co-head writer, may have let the cat out of the proverbial bag with a tweet that said she thought it was "so fabulous to write for [Budig] again!" At the time, Budig's character was still in a coma with no indication that she'd ever be seen or heard again.
Budig joined GH in March of this year in a non-contract role that was assumed to be short-term. Fans loved seeing her stir up trouble in a hot and heavy whirlwind pairing with Tyler Christopher's Nikolas Cassadine, and of course everyone is keen on seeing Hayden wake up from her coma, as she just may be the one to spill the news about Jake Doe's (Billy Miller) true identity.
