Matt Riedy shares details on Dr. Mayes' GH exit

Another one bites the dust: General Hospital's Matt Riedy discusses the unfortunate ending for Dr. Matthew Mayes.

Matt Riedy's time in General Hospital's Port Charles came to a close this week when his alter ego, Dr. Mayes, became the latest victim in the streak of hospital murders. And it turns out the neurologist's sudden departure was a bit of a surprise for the actor, as well.

"[Executive producer Frank Valentini] told me in a little aside that we had in the second to last episode we were doing, so I had a warning before going in," Riedy told Soap Opera Digest of how he found out he'd been cut from the soap. "We had a nice exchange, and I told him how thankful I was for the gift [of being able to play the role]."

The experience of being in Port Charles was quite special for the actor because his mother used to watch the show. "I remember the Luke [Anthony Geary] and Laura [Genie Francis] days, the Steve [John Beradino] and Jessie and Audrey [Rachel Ames] days," he shares. "And the guest cast that is coming through the show is phenomenal. It really pays tribute to how good the show and the actors are that you get so many great guest stars coming through, and I'm not including myself."

However, he probably should include himself on the list of impressive GH guest stars like James Franco (ex-Franco) and Dee Wallace (ex-Pat Spencer). After all, he's appeared opposite big Hollywood stars like Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall in his multiple-decade career. But that won't stop him from making future appearances in Port Charles if the opportunity comes about.

"I want to work and they're a great bunch, and I'm thankful for it," he says. "So at the drop of a hat, I would be back."
