18. Isolation

This is a defensive mental process where one detaches themselves from uncomfortable memories or thoughts by shutting them away in a compartment and taking the emotion out of them. This method is commonly used by people to deal with triggering situations and can repress them for the time being. But, it is unhealthy. It should be only used when a situation requires a healthy distance between overpowering thoughts and emotions.
