Luigi Mangione has been a recurring person in our feed for the past few days, but not for any good reason. He was the prime suspect in the fatal murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024. Mangione was arrested by police officers in Altoona, Pennsylvania after receiving an intimation from a McDonald’s employee.
His arrest has left the internet divided. While some advocated for stringent measures against him, others started a hashtag movement #FreeLuigi on X and other platforms. This did not end with only netizens having different viewpoints regarding his arrest.
Social media users have churned a new request for Mangione asking him to be named TIME’s ‘Person of the Year’ after the magazine outlet released the list of nominees. A person shared an X post saying both Mangione and Thomas Mathew Cooks should be given the esteemed title. The post read,
“@time Please give the honor of Person of the Year to both Luigi Mangione and Thomas Matthew Crooks. Two American HEROES who put everything on the line in service of our country. We can only hope that more of our countrymen and women follow in their footsteps.”
Here is what other X users had to say regarding the suggestion.
“luigi mangione lowkey deserves to be the TIME 2024 person of the year,” another person wrote.
“#UnitedHealthcareAssassin Let's make Luigi Mangione The Person of the Year,” an X user shared.
“Nominee: Luigi Mangione is considered for TIME Person of the Year,” an online user pointed out.
Clarification: TIME did not list Luigi Mangione as one of the nominees for Person of the Year 2024
TIME magazine will announce the winner of Person of the Year on December 12, 2024. The list of selected personalities was released on December 9, 2024. Over the years, famous individuals like Taylor Swift, Volodymyr Zelensky, Elon Musk, and others have been honored with various titles from the magazine.
However, for 2024, the competition is strong among ten candidates who are:
- Kamala Harris
- Kate Middleton
- Elon Musk
- Yulia Navalnaya
- Benjamin Netanyahu
- Jerome Powell
- Joe Rogan
- Claudia Sheinbaum
- Donald Trump
- Mark Zuckerberg
According to the New York Post, Mangione was dissatisfied and displeased with the country's healthcare system as one of his relatives was ill-treated. Besides that, he reportedly had his share of disdain for the system as he allegedly had a traumatic back surgery.
He comes from a wealthy family and is an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania. As per his LinkedIn page with over 400 connections, he volunteered for an assisted living facility a decade ago. Additionally, his family is an owner of Lorien Health Services which operates nursing homes, according to media outlets.
Reports suggest that Mangione was an anti-capitalist and worked towards climate change issues. He faces several charges for murder, possession of weapons, and forgery, as he allegedly used many fake IDs. Police officials ceased a passport, a suppressor, firearms, and other incriminating documents at the time of his arrest.
