Will Robinson, a Durant High School coach and Christian faith leader, lost his life in an accident that left his family in a critical state at the hospital in Oklahoma. Reportedly, the single-vehicle incident took place on Christmas Eve, at around 9:30 am.
At the time, Robinson was driving his White Chevrolet Traverse around, alongside his wife and four kids. However, with heavy rain in the area, he reached U.S.-75 and Taylor Street when the vehicle segued off the roadway and into a drainage ditch. Reportedly, the bodies of two went missing at the time, but in the hours since one has been recovered.
Here's all we know about Will Robinson's death as tributes flood social media
As reported by KXII, Sherman fire and police were responding to calls on the morning of December 24, after having received a 911. Lieutenant Samuel Boyle said in a statement:
"A vehicle had left the roadway and got caught in the drainage ditch around U.S.-75 and Taylor Street."
Per the outlet, the car was carried away by the strong currents, and it came to a halt just before it reached Houston Street. The currents trapped the family inside, and while they were able to resuscitate four out of the six, Will Robinson and one of his children, a girl, reportedly did not make it. Per Trek London, while Will's body was located, his daughter's remains were missing.
“It goes all the way down to the area where everybody likes to hunt for shark teeth,” said Boyle. “It kind of widens out there a little bit so the water slows down some. We’ll keep going as far south as we need to until we can locate the two missing people."
As for what happened to the car upon getting stuck, Boyle went on:
"It likely had to do with a large accumulation of water and maybe some hydroplaning, which is a very dangerous situation. Once they’re in that drainage ditch, they’re really at the mercy of the water flow and the speed at which that’s going down. it’s a tragedy, it really is.”
As investigations into the matter continue, Boyle is calling on all drivers to remain cautious in the rain:
"Please drive very carefully. Even if you think your vehicle can make it through some large standing water, please consider going around and taking another route because once you hit that standing water, you’ve really lost control of your vehicle.”
Per Ghana Celebrities, Will Robinson has been working with Durant Public Schools since 2019, where he worked as a teacher and a coach of the Durant Lady Lions basketball team. In the wake of his passing, tributes have been flooding social media.
One such statement comes from Susan Sumsurf, allegedly his cousin, who took to Facebook to confirm his passing in a statement:
"We received the heartbreaking news this afternoon that my sweet cousin Will Robinson and his family were involved in a terrible car accident this morning in Sherman,Texas. Sadly, Will did not make it. Search and rescue are still in the process of recovering his 8 year old daughter Clara. His wife Kristen and three other children survived, fortunately, though the circumstances are unimaginably traumatic. This is just devastating, and happening on Christmas Eve makes it unbearable. Will was one of the good ones—a devoted husband and father, a beloved basketball coach, and just a great person. Will’s mother is like a sister and Will’s dad and Will were very close. Please keep the entire Robinson family in your thoughts and prayers. RIP dear Will."
In their last update, the Sherman Police Department revealed that the State Search and Rescue teams are still making efforts to uncover the body of Will Robinson's daughter.
