Former daytime talk show host, Wendy Williams, has been the focus of a recent major public campaign that seeks to ensure her independence from a guardianship many feel is unjust. A GoFundMe page has now been launched and has collected more than $16,000 in just a few days.

The initiative is part of a larger social media movement where the hashtag "Free Wendy" is trending on X (formerly Twitter). According to the fundraising site:

"Friends of the Williams Family is organizing this fundraiser, and is titled “Support Wendy Williams' Fight for Independence.”

The fundraiser draws attention to Wendy Williams' struggles since she was "unjustly placed under guardianship and labeled as incapacitated" while being desperate for freedom. Her condition is said to be "unfair" and "deeply isolating" as her guardian isolated her from her friends and family, stripping her of her support system.

Wendy's family is working on bringing her back to Florida so she can spend time with people who love her. The fundraising page further highlights that they are emotionally strained. Having "exhausted their financial resources" in their fight against guardianship, now they need financial support to cover legal fees, which are described as "prohibitively expensive."

Guardianship and health issues of Wendy Williams

Wendy Williams has been in a highly publicized battle over her guardianship since 2022. This arose after her bank, Wells Fargo, expressed concern about her mental capacity, resulting in a court ruling that determined her to be an "incapacitated person," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

It was set to handle her personal and financial affairs because allegations of financial exploitation and undue influence against her situation made the guardianship inevitable.

Reports of diagnosis administered to Wendy Williams in legal documents indicate that the patient has a diagnosis of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia, both of which affected her cognitive processing and her capacity to perform speech.

Despite all these diagnoses, Williams has denied being cognitively impaired.

She recently appeared on The Breakfast Club on January 16, 2025, and stated frustration over limitations put on her because of the guardianship:

“I’m in this place where the people are in their 90s and their 80s and their 70s. ... I have breakfast, lunch and dinner right here on the bed. I watch TV, I listen to radio, I look out the window, I talk on the phone.”

She described the feelings of isolation and emotional distress that she experienced from her guardianship:

“I am not cognitively impaired, you know what I’m saying? But I feel like I’m in prison.”

In the interview, she lamented the fact that she is not allowed to speak freely without constraint or does not have access to the internet. She said that she feels trapped in such an environment that would not benefit her as a person.

“What do I think about being abused? Look, this system is broken, this system that I’m in. This system has falsified a lot.”

Williams expressed deep concern over missing significant family events, especially since her father is soon to celebrate his 94th birthday. She expressed anguish over the possibility of never stepping foot in her father's house again, saying that:

"The day after is not promised."

Social media platforms, especially X (formerly known as Twitter) have seen the growing #FreeWendy movement, as fans and supporters rally for Wendy Williams to fight an incendiary guardianship.

Alex Finnie, her niece, joined the conversation in The Breakfast Club and requested all her fans to start using the #FreeWendy hashtag on all social media. She said:

“My aunt sounds great. I’ve seen her, in a very limited capacity, but I’ve seen her and we’re talking to her. This does not match an incapacitated person. And that’s why we say she’s in a luxury prison, because she is being held and she is being punished for whatever reason that other people are coming up with as to why she has to be kept in this position.”

Several people have drawn parallels with the situation that Britney Spears found herself in, where conservatorship sparked a media and public outcry, leading to its termination.

Fans of Wendy Williams are therefore echoing sentiments that were voiced by the #FreeBritney movement, calling for similar action towards her freedom.

Comments on social media reflect this sentiment, with users expressing their determination to fight for Williams' rights as they did for Spears:

"If yall can free Britney so she can twirl around with her knives until the end of days. YALL CAN FREE WENDY!!!"
