Onijah Andrew Robinson, a New York woman, is making headlines for being stranded in Pakistan after flying out to meet her alleged 19-year-old husband.
The 33-year-old flew out to Karachi back in October to meet Nidal Ahmed Memon, 19. She claimed to have fallen in love with him, though he later abandoned her, alleging that his parents never agreed to their union. His whereabouts currently remain unclear, Arab News has reported.
Concerns about the woman's mental health have since been mounting, and given that her visa in Pakistan expired, she was shifted to one of the shelter homes belonging to the Chhipa welfare organization.
The organization was founded by Ramzan Chhipa in 2007, and according to the Charity Commission for England and Wales, it
"provides emergency and humanitarian services, particularly in Karachi but also nationwide."
It is a well-known charity in Pakistan.
Everything we know about Onijah Robinson as she remains stranded in Pakistan after turning down a flight back home
The American woman has been in Pakistan for months now, and she found shelter at the Chhipa welfare organization after a guesthouse owner refused to spare her a room and sent her to the police station instead. At the time, she was sick from exhaustion, a local Pakistani news outlet called Dialogue Pakistan has reported.
Ramzan Chippa has since revealed that he brought the woman home from the Tipu Sultan police station, located in PECHS block 6, as she was visibly sick, per the same outlet:
“The woman is like my sister and I arranged accommodation for her. She can live here as long as she wants," Chhipa said.
He also deployed volunteers to stay by her side and care for her.
“The woman would be looked after in the Chhippa shelter home, and we are doing this on a humanitarian basis,” he added.
Onijah Andrew Robinson also issued a statement on Friday, noting that she needs $20K stat, Images Dawn reports:
“My plan is to reconstruct this whole country. I am asking for $100K or more. I need $20K by this week. OK in my pocket and cash OK that’s a demand to the government. The government is going to fix up these buildings, fix up the streets and clean up these streets. It’s ridiculous out here. I do not like it,” she said at a press conference alongside Ramzan Chhipa in Karachi on Friday.
Earlier, it was reported that Onijah was placed under the care of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). Her situation was made viral when Jafriya Disaster Management Cell Welfare Organisation (JDC) founder Zaffar Abbas took to social media about the same.
Not long after, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori arranged to have her flown back home, though Robinson reportedly refused to board the flight. Instead, she took a taxi to her lover's building and remained there for almost thirty hours on Thursday, a day before she was relocated to the Chhipa charity shelter.
During Friday's press conference, Chhipa called on Memon to come and meet with Onijah to resolve the matter, Images Dawn has further reported.
“She left her home and family because of the boy, so if the family or the boy are listening, please come immediately and I will help you resolve this issue. Ask for forgiveness, regardless of the matter. You can only resolve things by talking to her,” he said.
He also noted that her mental state was fragile and that she kept changing her story every five minutes as she repeatedly asked to meet her “husband”. However, it is unclear if the two are actually married.
“Pakistan needs to be reconstructed the right way. I am married to Nidal Ahmed, I am Onijah Ahmed. We will move to Dubai soon and have our babies in Dubai,” she said.
Onijah Robinson is expected to remain at the Chhipa welfare organization shelter until she is flown back to the U.S.
