One lucky individual was named the recipient of a Mega Million lottery, nabbing a staggering $1.2 billion. Per the Delaware News Journal, the prize was the fifth largest in the history of the game. Just this March, someone became the winner of a $1.13 billion in New Jersey.

CBS News has reported that the numbers were pulled on Friday night, and as for the winning numbers, they were as follows: 3, 7, 37, 49, 55, and a Mega Ball of 6. A spokesperson for the company told the outlet that following Friday's win, "Ticket sales are going through the roof." He added that once a jackpot of such high value is up for grabs, ticket sales tend to skyrocket.

The winning ticket was purchased at a Sunshine Food and Gas station in Cottonwood California, located north of the state. As for the Mega Million lottery winners, they have the choice to opt between a lump sum payout or having the $1.22 billion be given to them in installments over the next 30 years. Should they opt for a lump sum payout, they would receive an average of $549.7 million.

The Delaware News Journal reports that December 27's draw alone hosted 5,691,299 winners across all tiers, apart from the ticket that won the jackpot. The second-tier prize, which went for $1 million, saw five winners: two from California, and one from Arizona, Missouri, and Texas.

“What an amazing present this holiday season! At an incredibly special time of year, this is both an incredibly special moment for our winner, and for all the great organizations and causes that benefit from lottery ticket sales around the country,” said Joshua Johnston, lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, per the New York Post.

Per CBS News, given that the chances of winning the lottery are 1 in 302,575,350, only three individuals won the Mega Millions jackpots this year. This is the 37th time in the history of the company that a jackpot was won in California, falling second only to New York, which has 44 wins to date.

“We know that many people will likely receive tickets to Friday’s drawing as holiday gifts, and what a gift that would turn out to be if you ended up with a ticket worth a $1.15 billion jackpot,” Johnston went on, per Kare11.

Per the New York Post, the next Mega Million drawing is slated for December 31, with the highest prize set to the default $20 million. Thus far, a lottery has never been won on New Year's Eve.
