Jonathan, better known as MegaLag, is a New Zealand-based YouTuber and creative producer renowned for his bold investigations, tech experiments, and social experiments using Apple AirTags. His channel skyrocketed in popularity after his unconventional tests involving AirTags, including sending them to North Korea, Elon Musk, and Apple CEO Tim Cook to see if they could successfully track their journey.

MegaLag also frequently explores other technology-related topics, including electric vehicles (EVs) and operating system software, adding educational value to his entertaining experiments.

In his most recent discoveries, according to The Verge, MegaLag has accused the popular browser extension Honey of being a 'scam' and alleges that the company has been 'profiting unfairly from influencers, even those who were paid to promote it.'

For those unfamiliar, Honey is a browser extension tool designed to automatically search for and apply coupon codes during online checkouts. However, MegaLag points out a significant flaw: Honey often fails to find the best available discount codes or instead pushes its Honey-branded promo codes, even when a quick internet search could yield better deals.

As reported by The Verge, Honey markets itself with the promise of 'finding every working promo code on the internet,' but MegaLag’s investigation suggests otherwise. According to his claims, this issue isn’t a bug but rather an intentional feature tied to Honey’s agreements with retail partners. These partnerships may prioritize Honey’s sponsored codes over better discounts available elsewhere, potentially shortchanging users.

MegaLag’s critique raises questions about transparency in Honey's operations and whether the extension truly serves the consumer’s best interest or simply maximizes profits through strategic partnerships. His findings challenge the trust many users have placed in the platform and highlight the importance of cross-checking deals manually rather than relying solely on automated tools.

How did MegaLag rise to prominence?

According to his YouTube Fandom account, after moving to Germany in 2016, MegaLag, aka Jonathan, worked as a motion designer at Trivago, where he pitched and produced successful TV ad concepts.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Jonathan was laid off, battled depression and anxiety, and eventually turned to YouTube as a creative outlet. MegaLag shot to fame with his viral video, I sent an AirTag to North Korea, Tim Cook, and Elon Musk, where he tracked packages across the globe. His AirTag experiments revealed logistical oddities and inefficiencies in global shipping systems, including errors caused by manual sorting in postal facilities.

In subsequent investigations, MegaLag uncovered potential fraudulent practices at DHL and exposed how mismanagement caused international shipping mishaps. DHL eventually invited him for a behind-the-scenes tour of their Frankfurt logistics hub, giving him deeper insight into their processes.

Jonathan has also attended the International Parcel-Post Convention, explored automated vs. manual sorting systems, and pursued interviews with postal unions—all while documenting the journey.

Beyond his AirTag adventures, MegaLag has faced challenges with German immigration policies, struggling to secure a residence permit despite his financial stability from YouTube earnings. He continues his content creation while balancing life between New Zealand and South Korea.
