Titled 28 Years Later, this latest part of the series is already raising expectations on its mysterious plot, intense fight scenes, and cameo of Jim portrayed by Cillian Murphy. The sequel to the wildly popular 28 Days Later released the first trailer on December 10, 2024, and the internet could not be more excited.

But the icing on the cake is that Murphy’s name does not appear in the credits as part of the cast but loyalists say that his character featured in the preview.

Yes, the trailer of the movie shows a scene where a zombie slowly stands up from the midst of a field. Could it be Jim back from the undead or is it just wishful thinking?

In either case, social media sites are having discussions, making jokes, and, in some cases, indulging in zombie fantasies.

An X (formerly Twitter) handle shared the visuals, stating:

"Cillian Murphy stuns in first look at ‘28 Years Later.’"
Another user humorously stated: "Oh he hasn’t aged a day."
Another user noted: "This has to be makeup 😭"
A comment read: "Did he actually starve himself for this role or is this insane makeup and CGI."
A user stated: "I thought this was Cardi."
Another user jokingly said: "Me when I go one night without my 1000 calorie 9pm sweet treat."

A user thought Murphy looked more like a character from SpongeBob

A user suggested: "Just a little hyaluronic acid should fix that up, Cillian!"

What’s in the 28 Years Later trailer?

The trailer immediately starts captivating: there is that feeling of distorted nostalgia and complete anarchy. Children are just watching Teletubbies on an old TV set and then the scene changes to a zombie apocalypse. The Rage Virus is back in full swing and the world is still a very, very bad place.

Anyone who has followed the series with anticipation will be delighted to see some new faces in action for survival’s sake. 28 Years Later stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes.

The sequel is set (bet you’ve guessed it) 28 years after the outbreak of the virus and is all about survival in a world where people combat not only the creatures but human nature as well. It features the usual high-impact sequences, the adrenaline rush, the thrill and the horror element and all that is between.

Who’s running the show?

Danny Boyle, director of the original movie of 2002, and Alex Garland, writer of the same movie are back in this post-apocalyptic ride. The first movie revolutionized the Zombie film altogether and the fans are optimistic for this one to do the same.

And as for comebacks, Cillian Murphy has kept everyone on edge about the comeback in the show. While he’s not starring in the trailers and posters, he is credited as an executive producer. That is enough to sustain the vision of the true supporters—and energize them.

What’s the deal with 28 Years Later?

The third installment of the 28 Days Later series investigates the desperate consequences of the Rage Virus almost three decades on. It has evolved from mere zombies to a compilation of tragic attempts by people at trying to rebuild a better world out of the whole ruin they created, or further deteriorate the same.

When Boyle and Garland take the helm, fans should be clamoring for a film that respects the originals and builds upon new exciting territories.

It’s about time as 28 Years Later will arrive on June 20, 2025, bringing all sorts of terror, suspense, and titillating questions. Will Jim return? What’s humanity’s next move? But first of all— who is getting out of it alive?
