Waffle House has recently come into the line of fire over its recently implemented egg surcharge. In a dig at its competitor, the Tennessee-based Cracker Barrel has boldly announced that it will be keeping egg prices the same.
The eatery's sharp and witty response comes after Waffle House announced a temporary increase in egg prices, citing environmental factors. It said the surcharge was due to rising egg prices fueled by the outbreaks of bird flu impacting flocks of egg-laying hens.
“The continuing egg shortage caused by [highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu] has caused a dramatic increase in egg prices. Customers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions. … We cannot predict how long this shortage will last. We are continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow,” the restaurant chain told The Daily Beast.
Cracker Barrel knocks Waffle House by pledging the prices to remain the same, offering double rewards
Cracker Barrel shared a statement with Today:
"A surcharge on eggs? Well, there’s nothing hospitable about that. At Cracker Barrel, country hospitality is as important to us as a hearty breakfast, and that means not charging extra for eggs."
In a statement posted to Facebook, Cracker Barrel also said they would double the reward points for those signed up for its reward program. This was in direct contrast to Waffle House's decision to crank up the prices amid the rising cost of eggs due to the shortage caused by HPAI (bird flu).
The internet has also had a field day responding to the news of Waffle House increasing egg prices. Netizens came up with some hilarious responses, demonstrating that the internet will always find the absurdity within a situation, no matter how grim or serious it may seem. Some of the hilarious tweets are listed below for your amusement:

Another fan (@OhTravs) hilariously offered to bring his own eggs. Wonder if the people at Waffle House will give him a discount for that...

Waffle House is notorious for its reputation, where fights get started randomly at the mere lift of a finger. Fans on X hilariously debated whether it was time to bring out the big guns:
Watching people debate attacking Waffle House is wild—it is like planning a heist on a place where the staff can suplex you through the grill. And it is well known that a healthy Waffle House employee can take on 10 bears at once. So, risk it at your own peril!
Another user came up with this funny GIF that captures the frustration we're all facing even as the day when we'll have to fight the cook for a to-go box instead of a meal draws closer to us:
Some of us are so deeply in love with Waffle House that we might never be able to let go. It doesn't matter how much they charge us! One user (@DJShinobiShaw) drew our attention to the situation and came up with this post that neatly sums up the circumstances at hand:
We might have to do something about this unhealthy obsession with Waffle House. And soon.
The good news is that Cracker Barrel has opted to incentivize customer loyalty as it clamped down heavily on its competitor by coming up with pointed remarks on social media. On a serious front, egg prices have spiked nearly 37 percent over the last year, leading many in the industry to adjust pricing strategies.
The outbreak has forced the food industry to reassess their purchasing decisions as experts warn that egg prices may not decrease anytime soon. Sheesh, these are crazy times we live in. Hope it gets sorted out soon so we can enjoy waffles and steaks at our favorite restaurants!
