Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum delivered a knockout response to Donald Trump's latest brainwave: renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." Yep, Trump thinks slapping an American label on the Gulf is just what the world needs.

But Sheinbaum wasn't having any of it and dished out a roast that left social media rolling.

In a press conference on January 8, 2025, Sheinbaum quipped:

"Why don't we call it Mexican America? It sounds nice, no?"

She even backed up her sass with a 1607 map that named the Gulf just as it is today and referred to North America as "Mexican America." You can almost hear the mic drop.

Naturally, social media went bananas. One user suggested,

“How about Meximerica? WAY better ring to it.”
Another user shared a map captioned: “Make America Mexico again.”

A commenter summed up the vibe perfectly:

“The next four years are going to be entertaining to say the least.”

And who could miss the zinger that perfectly captured the mood:

“Can’t believe Donald Trump is doing something that makes Claudia become a stand-up comedian.”
A comment read: "How did we end up in this timeline."
Another comment read: "Amazing how a debate over renaming an ocean is bringing everyone together to share history lessons and dad jokes."

Sheinbaum didn’t just rely on humor; she brought receipts. Whipping out a 1607 map, she illustrated that the Gulf of Mexico’s name isn’t just a modern invention.

She noted that foundational Mexican documents before the current Mexican Constitution also referenced North America as "Mexican America."

Her point is to prove that Mexico's claim to parts of North America throughout its history is more than just something ancient-it serves as a reminder of the deep connections between these two nations.

She made a brief reference to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, by which in 1848 the U.S.-Mexico border was defined. This is a subtle but powerful reminder of the territorial shifts that followed the U.S.-Mexican War.

Meanwhile, the context of Trump’s proposal

Trump’s suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico came during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate. He claimed the name change had "a beautiful ring" to it and framed it as a patriotic move.

But that wasn’t the end of his geographical ambitions. He also floated the idea of annexing Greenland and the Panama Canal Zone using military force, and even mused about making Canada the 51st state through "economic force."

“We're going to put very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada because Canada, they come through Canada too, and the drugs that are coming through are at record numbers.”

His proposal was wrapped in his familiar rhetoric on illegal immigration and trade policies, threatening a 25% tariff on Mexico if it didn’t tighten its borders.

But since those jabs, the duo have dialed it down, literally—they’ve chatted on the phone and kept their roasting sessions strictly off-stage, Euro News reports.

Trump is set to take office on January 20.
