Kendrick Lamar has recently dropped his highly anticipated "Luther" music video in collaboration with SZA. The song is named after R&B and soul singer Luther Vandross and the music video is a heady blend of stunning visuals and powerful lyrics. But when the song came out, instead of celebrating this artistic triumph, fans decided to turn it into yet another round of “Who’s the GOAT?”.
Kendrick Lamar's latest track 'Luther' fans the old flames
The music video for Luther in itself is a cinematic masterpiece- within hours of its release it caught the attention of millions of hip-hop aficionados. But the attention was apparently for all the wrong reasons as fans hijacked the moment to reignite the never-ending Drake vs Kendrick Lamar debate.
It seems like we're all running in circles as fans have developed a taste for turning everything into a Drake vs Kendrick debate. So when the music video for Luther dropped, this instance was no different, as fans went at it again by comparing the song to Drake’s latest hit Nokia:
"He really got Drake on his mind", quipped one fan (via X / @TreRighteous)
"Copied the sh*t out the Nokia video he wants to be Drake so bad", another fan chimed in (via X / @fooxxxyyyyyy)
And just like that, the floodgates opened.
The most absurd aspect of the feud between the two is that fans don't just compare their tracks or disses- that is not in vogue anymore. Every aspect of life- from fashion sense to authenticity to even the way they interact with fans- gets a Kendrick vs Drake spin added to it. It's even so ridiculous that fans dragged SZA into the Drake vs. Kendrick discourse, and she has nothing to do with the feud!
It has gotten so out of hand now that it is honestly hilarious. Fans don't leave anything to chance to pit the two rappers against each other- even Drake's stans were out in full force since Kendrick Lamar released his new music video:
"Time to bot like us", mocked one fan (via X / @AmineZerdaniXV)
One fan hilariously broke into a lyrical chorus while dissing K Dot:
"Diss track, sounding like some fan mail All that preparation and the plan failed"
Of course, Kendrick Lamar's fans were not to be left behind on the fun too and they joined hands to throw shades at Drake in return, arguing Nokia was just “a ringtone with a budget":
"No two-week promo, no endless teasers. Still did double the views of the ringtone in 24 hours. Just GOAT things", commented one fan (via X / @birdie_raven7)
Another fan, while announcing his plans for the rest of the day, had the netizens in splits when they shared this GIF:
Yet another fan had everyone in stitches with this hilariously on-point post:
"Kendrick's blank in the eyes stare at the beginning looks like me trying to plan my weekend", joked the fan (via X / @Charmqn2004)
Kendrick Lamar's latest song's release sent the netizens into a tailspin as the discourse once again flowed towards a familiar territory. While fans were losing their minds over who was the GOAT, lost in the argument was the fact that 'Luther' is a masterpiece.
Maybe after the dust has settled on the beef, fans will come to realize the beauty of the song. Until then, we'll be laughing with the fans who have really kept the drama alive on our timelines!
