Anders Vistisen, a Danish Member of the European Parliament, has delivered a political message to Trump. During a session in Strasbourg on January 22, Vistisen addressed President Donald Trump’s interest in purchasing Greenland. He stated:

"Dear President Trump, listen very carefully, Greenland had been part of the Danish Kingdom for 800 years, it’s an integrated part of our country. It is not for sale. Let me put it in words you might understand Mr. Trump, f*** off."

It highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding the notion of U.S. ownership of the autonomous territory, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Background on Trump’s interest in Greenland

Back in 2019, Trump floated the idea of buying Greenland. His pitch was that Greenland’s strategic and economic value was one to keep an eye on. Now recently, in December 2024, Trump revisited his plans and called Greenland "an absolute necessity."

He also said, Greenland was needed for economic security. However, Trump isn't the first United States president to show interest in expanding US territories and acquiring Greenland. In 1867, after President Andrew Johson successfully bought Alaska, he also floated the idea of purchasing Greenland.

In fact, after World War II ended, Harry Truman's administration also offered $100 million to purchase the island.

Currently, the price to acquire Greenland would fall somewhere between $12.5 billion and $77 billion, as per The New York Times, which cited real estate developer David Barker.

Greenland is nestled between North America and Europe, which is a strategic location for military purposes. Moreover, despite the frozen look of Greenland, it is, in fact, a geologist’s paradise. It is believed to be rich in rare earth metals, oil, and gas – exactly what fuels the tech and renewable energy solutions industries.
