The Upper West Side community in Manhattan is reeling from the sudden closure of Absolute Bagels. This bagel shop has served its beloved bagels for over 30 years. This shop on Broadway between 107th and 108th Streets has been often lauded by fans as one of the best bagel destinations in New York City.
Shoppers were met with locked gates and a handwritten notice reading,
“We are closed.”
This short closure left many fans in disbelief, and shock. Shoppers, neighbors, and even tourists gathered outside the closed shop. Their disbelief is retained as the official website of the shop mentions nothing regarding the shutdown. Rather it still reads,
"Welcome to Absolute Bagels. Step into Absolute Bagels, where every bite brings you the true taste of New York! Freshly boiled and baked to perfection, our bagels are crafted with love and tradition."
It continues:
"Whether you're a local or just visiting, we offer a wide selection of flavors and spreads that are guaranteed to satisfy. From classic favorites to unique creations, there's something for everyone at Absolute Bagels. Come by today and experience why we're the go-to spot for bagel lovers in the city!
Fans are left heartbroken as Absolute Bagels closes down
The abrupt closure came without warning on December 12, 2024. It was shortly after a failed inspection by the New York City Department of Health (DOH). The shop reportedly received a 67-point violation. Inspectors cited several issues that include rats in food preparation areas, improperly stored food and unhygienic conditions.
Sam Silverman, an Absolute Bagel fan came on Instagram to share the news of the sudden shutting of the beloved bagel shop. He captioned:
"Absolute-ly shocking news. A New York institution abruptly closed. I don’t know the full story as to why, yet. Stay tuned- the truth will come out soon."
To which, a fan commented:
"This is tragic!", shared @sophiagetshungry.
Numerous other fans also dropped in to share their shock, and sadness over Absolute Bagels getting closed. Below are what some of them had to comment:
"noooo i am shocked!! love absolute forever", expressed a fan.
"We are so upset! We have been going for 16 yrs!!", remarked another.
"Best bagel in New York. I wish I could’ve had one last bagel with cream cheese.", lauded a third.
"💔💔💔", emoted @jewishsoundingname.
Reports revealed gnawed sugar packets under counters. Besides, smoked salmon in the display case was allegedly contaminated by dripping wastewater. Glue traps containing dead rats were also found on kitchen equipment.
The DOH tagged these conditions as a public health hazard. This eventually led to an immediate shutdown. While such closures are often temporary, Absolute Bagels' case appears a permanent one.
