Why did Stanley recall 2.6 million mugs? Drama explained

Stanley has issued a voluntary recall of 2.6 million travel mugs after receiving 91 reports of detaching lids globally. This was due to a design flaw that caused the lids to detach unexpectedly.

The bottles posed a burn risk and caused 38 burn injuries globally. The recall impacts the brand’s Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs.

These mugs were reportedly sold between June 2016 and December 2023 and were available in global retail outlets like Walmart, Target, and Amazon. Among the reports from customers, 16 incidents and two injuries occurred in the United States, with 11 cases worldwide requiring medical attention.

Identifying the recalled Stanley mugs

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) confirmed the reported issue and advised customers to stop using the recalled mugs immediately. To address the problem, the drinkware brand has decided to serve free replacement lids for the recalled products.

The brand took to Instagram to announce the recall. The post is captioned:

"We are voluntarily recalling the Switchback [12 oz and 16 oz] and Trigger Action [12 oz, 16 oz and 20 oz] Travel Mugs in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)."

It continues:

" We ask that all customers in possession of either product immediately stop use and reach out to Stanley 1913 for a free replacement lid. At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life. For more information, please visit, https://www.Stanley1913TMrecall.expertinquiry.com"

The recall applies to 12-ounce, 16-ounce, and 20-ounce mugs from the Switchback and Trigger Action lines. These mugs were priced between $20 and $50. Customers can identify the recalled mugs by checking the product numbers featured on the bottom of the mugs, such as 20-01437, and 20-02030.

"Stanley 1913 is voluntarily recalling the Switchback [12 oz and 16 oz] and Trigger Action [12 oz, 16 oz and 20 oz] Travel Mugs in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), because the lid threads can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, causing the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard."

It continues:

"We ask all our customers currently in possession of the Switchback or Trigger Action travel mugs to immediately stop use of these products and complete a registration for a free replacement lid."
