André 3000 arrived at the Met Gala but with a twist. Unlike most celebrities who chose a classic event look, the singer stood out in a black outfit with a piano attached to his back. While fans guessed the meaning behind his look and the piano, it later became clear that he was using the moment to promote his new album, 7 Piano Sketches, which he released on the same day as the Met Gala, May 5. His Met Gala outfit matched the album's cover.
The jumpsuit was made in collaboration with his own clothing line, Benjamin Bixby, and Burberry. The outfit was designed by André 3000 and Daniel Lee, who collaborated with stylist Law Roach. Through this collaboration, the rapper has also hinted at the return of his clothing line.
In an interview during the Met Gala with Emma Chamberlain, the rapper revealed that the piano attached to his back was completely functional and wasn't heavy to carry.
André 3000 gives details behind the 7 Piano Sketches album
André 3000's release of 7 Piano Sketches coincided with his piano outfit appearance at the Met Gala on May 5. The singer uploaded a post on Instagram in which he wrote,
"These piano sketches are improvisations. To conjure them up, I spread my fingers out on the keys and randomly but with purpose move them around until I find something that feels good or interesting. If it feels really good I will try to repeat it. I cannot name which notes, keys or chords that I’m playing. I simply like the sound and mechanics of piano playing."
He further described the rawness of the album by adding,
"Pardon the sound quality, they were all recorded with my iPhone sitting directly on the piano or my laptop microphone with the exception of ‘Blueberries’. (recorded in studio) Most of these were recorded in Texas. The house my son and I were renting had no furniture at all. Only a piano, our beds and tv screens."
The rapper also joked that it’s the worst rap album ever because there are no lyrics. However, he also called it the best. As per the singer, it’s the most emotionally freeing and the best he’s ever felt.
The complete tracklist of the 7 Piano Sketches is as follows:
- Bluffing in the Snow
- And Then One Day You’ll …
- When You’re an Ant and You Wake Up in an Awesome Mood, About to Drive Your Son to School, Only to Discover That You Left the Lights on in the Car Last Night So Your Battery Is Drained
- Hotel Lobby Pianos
- Blueberry Mansions
- Off Rhythm Laughter
- I Spend All Day Waiting for the Night
The complete album, 7 Piano Sketches, is sixteen minutes and twenty-one seconds long and is now available on streaming platforms.
