For months, fans and enthusiasts speculated that Taylor Swift had turned down a formal offer from the NFL because of ownership rights over performance footage. However, according to Swift, her absence from the Super Bowl has less to do with business. Instead, it is related to her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

Jimmy Fallon asked Swift whether she declined the Halftime Show because of issues with performance rights. Swift replied,

"Jay-Z has always been very good to me. Our teams are really close. They sometimes call and say, 'How does she feel about the Super Bowl?' But that's not like an official offer or a boardroom thing, just casual conversations."

Jay-Z, the founder of Roc Nation, produces the halftime show through his company. Taylor Swift continued:

"We are always able to tell him the truth. I am in love with a guy who does that sport on that actual field. That is violent chess. That is gladiators without swords. It's dangerous. The whole season, I am locked in on what that man is doing on the field. Can you imagine? He is out there every week putting his life on the line, doing this very high-pressure, high-intensity sport, and I'm sitting there like, 'I wonder what my choreo should be?'"

She added,

"And this has nothing to do with Travis, he would love for me to do it. I am just too locked in."
