Rock music icon Iggy Pop recently found another way to shock fans when he ended his UK concert by being wheeled offstage in a coffin. The concert in London was part of the musician's Lust for Life tour, and he gave a lively performance, playing classics from his old and new albums.
Iggy, true to his reputation, played shirtless, wearing only black pants and shoes as he sang the hits with the same irrepressible energy that made him famous in the 1960s. After the music faded, everyone sat silently until the stagehands moved a black coffin out and the punk star climbed inside, causing the crowd to clap and cheer as he was wheeled offstage.
Reactions to the performance have taken over the internet and have sparked a wave of reactions on social media. The rock icon himself addressed the act in a recent Instagram post, accompanied by a neat caption, which captured the theatrics of his performance.
Is Lust for Life tour going to be Iggy Pop's swansong?
Iggy Pop, now 78, is a man of theatrics - over the course of his half-century-old career, he has consistently wowed audiences with his penchant for the dramatic. From rolling in broken glass to covering himself in peanut butter during performances, the pop star has never ceased to amaze audiences, and his latest act also has the same dramatic feel to it.
The rockstar's theatrics have caught the public eye recently, this being the second time over the past week that he has attempted the trick while being on stage. His acts have also sparked rumors of retirement, though there has been no official confirmation to that end from the artist's team.
While many have construed the Lust for Life tour as Iggy Pop's last, he has shown no signs of slowing down and recently expressed his willingness to continue performing in an interview with Rolling Stone:
"The central job has a lot to do with beating on things, strumming things, waving your arms about, and opening your mouth to yell or talk or sing a melody. And I enjoy those things. I think there are days where I think, ‘Oh, I’d like to be by the sea with my feet up,’ of which I do at least a few times every year, but to actually shut down the part of you that needs to compete, that needs to move forward and just imagine that you’re going to enjoy [that]? I don’t think so. I don’t think that works."
He then went on to add:
"Sometimes I think, well, maybe I could be one of these guys that just takes lots of mega vitamins and does push-ups when he’s 92 or something, to see how long I could live, but I don’t think I could do that either. So I’m just somebody who’s lucky that I found something to do when I was a preteen and I can still do it."
The recent Iggy Pop concert was already highly anticipated as part of his Lust for Life tour, but nobody expected it would become legendary for its finale rather than its setlist. Whether this truly is a farewell tour or simply another chapter in his unpredictable career, Iggy Pop has once again demonstrated why he remains one of rock’s most compelling performers.
