Jill Sobule lost her life in a house fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, at the age of sixty-six. The tragic incident happened on May 1. The news was reported by her spokesperson, David Elkin. Her manager, John Porter, confirmed the news in a statement given to the Minnesota Star Tribune, stating,

"Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture. I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client and a friend today. I hope her music, memory and legacy continue to live on and inspire others."

The cause of the house fire is still being investigated, and no final conclusion has been reached. According to the authorities, there's no sign of foul play.

Jill Sobule did not have children. She has a brother, James Sobule, and a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Sobule. Jill’s family also includes her nephews, Ian, Matthew, and Robert, and Robert's wife, Irina.

"I just received the devastating news that my friend Jill Sobule has died… I am deeply heartbroken… I have no words… Jill’s words, her music, her boundless creativity, her unique, bold, artistic integrity… her admirable bravery and commitment to freedom of speech and expression live on as a beacon of joy and hope always… I love you, Jill… May you soar on the wings of Peace, my friend… 💙"

American comedian and actress Margaret Cho also expressed her sadness about the news by writing,

"This is not real to me. @jillsobule I am in shock and cannot process this. #restinpower"

Sarah Kate Ellis, President of GLAAD, a U.S. nonprofit promoting inclusive LGBTQ+ media representation, added,

"She was a close friend of mine and warrior when women, and the world, needed one. She literally created a path for queer people and women in music. And her legacy will live on forever."
