Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s smash hit Luther is still doing wonders on the charts. The R&B and hip-hop love ballad has spent 10 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.
The hip-hop track was released on November 29, 2024, in honour of R&B and soul singer Luther Vandross and has become Lamar and SZA’s sixth and third number-one track on the Hot 100. According to Billboard, Luther is amongst the elite 4% category of all the Billboard Hot 100 toppers—tracks that have ruled for double-digit weeks.
Of this category, it is also the first song by a solo man and woman to have ruled for double-digit weeks. Luther is a clever sampling of the 1982 rendition of If This World Were Mine by Vandross and Cheryl Lynn. In the song, Lamar and SZA fantasise about having all the resources in the world to please their lovers.
Netizens react to Luther by Kendrick Lamar and SZA spending 10 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100
A music news update chart, @nfr_podcast on X, shared that Luther has spent 10 consecutive weeks at the peak of the Hot 100 chart. It also added that Luther is one week away from tying with THE BOX as the longest-running number-one hit by a rapper in the 2020s.
@DogNinja99 tweeted in response:
“Doing this organically is crazy.”
Other fans of the artists praised the rapper for achieving the milestone:
“Kendrick Lamar is him. I don’t care what they say,” @Rihanna_ASAP21 gushed.
Another addressed naysayers in the comments:
“Y’all can hate all you want, but we were singing word for word at his concert in Arlington!! The song is (fire emoji),” @BardiLit added.
An X user predicted that Luther would cinch a Grammy Award next year:
“Kendrick finna definitely get a Grammy for this album,” @Tvpac_Dead stated.
Some Netizens didn’t seem to agree with Luther’s position on the charts and expressed such:
“This is the most fake number one run lol. Everyone knows it deep down inside it makes no sense,” @Mainecrypto1 explained.
“That doesn’t make any sense, haha. I haven’t gone out of my way to listen to it and definitely haven’t heard it anywhere in public,” @Luke9910 added.
“How many plays/streams are from people who never actually selected or voluntarily played the song? You'd be surprised. Kendrick can't be proud of this cheating,” @Nhlokzin replied.
Kendrick Lamar and SZA are currently on their Grand National tour, which began on April 19, 2025, and will conclude in August of the same year.
