A new chapter is being written in Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain's rivalry. The feud has its roots dating back to 2022, and new life is being breathed into it after Lana accused Cain of crossing the line. The singer released a snippet of a new song that contained unmistakable references to Cain. In the Instagram post, Lana was heard singing the following lyrics:
"Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post / Think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago pose."
Lana Del Rey's reference to a “Chicago pose” appears to relate to a photo that she took at Cook County Jail, and the pointed lyrics have captured the attention of many on social media. Later on in the video, the songstress was also seen making barbs about being "The most famous girl at the Waffle House." These lyrics seem to be a direct shot at Cain.
Ethel Cain and Lana Del Rey's rivalry
Ethel Cain had long critiqued Lana Del Rey and her music on social media and came to openly criticize her in interviews as well. After Cain's album (Preacher Daughter) was released, the media started drawing parallels between the performer and Del Rey.
These comparisons displeased Ethel Cain to a great extent, who then went on to elaborate on the reasons for his frustrations. He wrote on a Tumblr post:
"I love Lana and I love her music but there’s a hundred other things at play here… sometimes people arrive at Lana Del Rey and stop at Lana Del Rey. And yeah I called it lazy writing because it’s lazy for me and her. I think it’s kind of a detriment to the expansive work of two female artists to just reduce them to being similar to each other."
Adding another layer of complexity to the conflict is the involvement of Jack Donoghue, a mutual acquaintance of both artists. Jack appears to be a significant factor in the controversy, with both artists posting photos with him at different times. Indirect social media interactions have taken place between Cain and Del Rey since then, and they recently came to a boil after the latter's Instagram post.
At the heart of Del Rey’s accusations are claims about body-shaming, as she went on to explain in a social media comment section. In a detailed statement, Del Rey said:
"I didn’t know who Ethel was until a few years ago — when someone brought to my attention the disturbing and graphic side-by-side images she would often put up of me next to unflattering creatures and cartoon characters making constant comments about my weight, I was confused at what she was getting at. Then when I heard what she was saying behind closed doors from mutual friends and started inserting herself into my personal life I was definitely disturbed."
Cain has gone to social media to respond to the situation, announcing publicly that Del Rey has blocked her on Instagram. The actions of the two artists indicate that bad blood has been brewing between them in recent years.
