When questioned if he ever referred to Eminem by his real name, Marshall, in Vanity Fair's Lie Detector Test, he said,
"Yeah. It gets to a point where it's weird to call him Eminem cause everyone in his circle calls him Marshall. And just gets to a point that if you're not doing it, then you're not in the circle sort of thing."
Ed Sheeran has credited rapping Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP with helping him overcome his childhood stutter. He received the album as a gift when he was nine and found that he stuttered less while rapping along.
Ed Sheeran opens up on his stutter and how Eminem's song helped him
Ed Sheeran’s stutter began when he was about nine years old. It started after he had a treatment to remove a birthmark from his face. The topic was also discussed on The Howard Stern Show, where Stern revealed that the singer was not given anesthesia while proceeding with the treatment, which caused a burn and led to his stutter.
According to Sheeran, the lack of anesthesia affected his nervous system, which contributed to his stutter. The Photograph singer further explained how Eminem's music helped him by saying,
"When I was nine, my uncle bought me The Marshall Mathers LP, and he just said to my dad, this guy's the next Bob Dylan; you've got to let him listen."
He explained further,
"By learning that record and rapping it back to back to back to back, it cured my stutter, and I stopped talking like that."
In the Vanity Fair interview, the British singer also shared that the final verse of Eminem’s 2000 track Criminal was the most challenging for him to learn.
The singer has been good friends with Eminem for years now. Ed also later performed for Eminem at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, showing their close bond and musical connection.
On The Howard Stern Show, Ed Sheeran also shared that he was nervous when he first went to Eminem's Detroit studio. But as soon as they met, they started talking about Marvel comics, which helped break the ice. Eminem already knew about Ed’s stutter and how his music helped him, so there was no awkwardness between them.
Ed Sheeran and Eminem have collaborated on three songs, which include River, Those Kinda Nights, and Remember the Name.
