Selena Gomez recently met up with Taylor Swift on May 31, 2025. However, before her meetup with her fellow singer, Gomez was allegedly spotted with a vape (also known as an e-cigarette) while getting ready for the meetup. Gomez is not supposed to vape, as she has had a kidney transplant recently, as well as suffers from lupus.

The viral photos have since sparked reactions online, with some condemning the singer for her alleged actions after a kidney transplant, as exemplified by the tweet quoted below:

"Francia needs to take that damn kidney back."
"It should be forbidden to put Selena on the transplant list, since as soon as she passes the post-operative phase the first thing she does is drink and take drugs, this is disrespectful to the donor and those waiting in line." one netizen opined.
"Selena Gomez vaping, like Francia give her a KIDNEY for that???." another netizen reacted.

Others were more understanding of the singer, stating:

"Selena used to smoke cigarettes before transplant it’s not news . She was seen doing it many times she literally switched to vaping bc it’s supposedly less harmful than the cigarettes she used to smoke . So she actually did take some steps in quitting." one fan stated.
"Guys that is weed please be serious." another fan stated, referring to the fact that cannabis (weed) can be used for pain relief by some lupus patients.

Selena Gomez has been smoking since 2012

Selena Gomez first started smoking for her role in the Harmony Korine-directed crime film Spring Breakers, which was released in 2012. This was followed by years of on-and-off smoking, including during her early struggles with lupus. In 2016, the singer was spotted smoking a vape outside her rehab facility. This was just a year before her kidney transplant in 2017.

In 2017, as mentioned above, the singer received a kidney transplant. She received the kidney from actress Francia Raisa, someone she acknowledged during an appearance on the Apple TV+ documentary series Dear… in 2023:

"My best friend. Her name is Francia. She said, 'No, I am absolutely getting tested. And within three days, she went to get tested, and she was a match. And it was one of those moments where I felt watched over. I know I was so so so lucky."

Soon after receiving her kidney transplant, she reportedly returned to smoking, with the singer being spotted with a vape in 2018 while on vacation in Rome, and then again during a reading of the Bill of Rights in November 2019.

Selena Gomez’s health struggles and recent musical comeback

In addition to her lupus diagnosis, Selena Gomez revealed in 2024 that she was also suffering from small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), which the Mayo Clinic defines as an abnormal increase in the overall population of bacteria in the intestine.

SIBO causes malnutrition, diarrhea, unintentional weight loss, and other problems, and is generally treated with a mix of antibiotics and nutritional supplements.

Selena Gomez recently released her first collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, with her partner and record producer Benny Blanco. The album features guest appearances by Tainy, J Balvin, Gracie Abrams, and The Marías. The deluxe edition includes 22 tracks, while the standard edition contains 14 tracks.
