Michael Eugene Archer, famous by the name D’Angelo, died on October 14 at the age of 51. The singer was battling pancreatic cancer, according to a source statement to PEOPLE. The news was confirmed by his family through the statement:

"The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life ... After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D'Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D'Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today"

D’Angelo had been active in the music industry since 1991 and was a four-time Grammy winner with a total of fourteen nominations. Some of his famous songs include Brown Sugar, Unshaken, Lady, and Send It On. The news has come as a shock to the music industry, with musicians paying their tributes and remembering him.

Remembering D’Angelo, Tyler, the Creator, wrote on Instagram:

"D’s talent was so pure and natural he moved energy in a way that only geniuses could. I’d been blessed to work with a few, so I saw the same thing in D immediately! Even with that, D’Angelo was one of one. The way he sang, the way he composed, even the way he programmed his keyboards was unique and singular. He created an entire genre of music just by being himself."
