The Beths are a New Zealand indie rock band that consists of four members: Elizabeth Stokes, the lead vocalist, Jonathan Pearce, the guitarist, Benjamin Sinclair on the bass, and drummer, Tristan Deck. The band was formed more than ten years ago in 2014 when they were in university. The original band included another member, Ivan Luketina-Johnston, who left The Beths in 2018.
Fast forward to 2025, The Beths have released three studio albums in total. Their singles discography spans over a total of 19 tracks, including their newest song, Metal, which has yet to be released. The single was inspired by the lead singer's mental health struggles and diagnoses, as well as intense touring.
Elizabeth Stokes gave Billboard some insight into the band's newest single. She said:
"'Metal' is a song about being alive and existing in a human body... That is something I have been acutely aware of in the last few years, where I have been on what one might call a 'health journey'."
Regarding her diagnoses and mental health, she elaborated:
"For parts of the last few years, I kind of felt like my body was a vehicle that had carried me pretty well thus far but was breaking down, something I had little to no control over... All of the steps in the Rube Goldberg machine of life are so unlikely, and yet here we are in it."
The Beths get candid about writing and producing Metal
Since the song itself was heavily inspired by Elizabeth Stokes' journey with her diagnosis and mental health issues. It was also the result of an intense tour. Apart from what Elizabeth has shared, she added:
"I have a hunger and a curiosity for learning about the world around me, and for learning about myself. And despite all the ways that my body feels like a broken machine, I still marvel at the complexity of such a machine," Stokes says, grateful for being alive."
She further explained the meaning behind Metal. She said:
"I can hold that knowledge in one hand, and yet with the other hand I can point to my reflection and just be like 'you are s**t.' Or 'ugly.' Or 'worthless,'... I can reliably respond to any suggestion that I might be able to achieve any small thing with 'no'. And these are variations of the 'short word' referenced in the song."
