During his appearance on the July 24 episode of Penn Badgley’s Podcrushed podcast, Nick Jonas spoke about his battle with type 1 diabetes, an illness he was diagnosed with at the age of 13. The now 32-year-old actor-cum-singer revealed that his older brother Joe was the one who drew his parents’ attention to the matter after seeing him without his clothes.

“He was sort of like chaperoning me. We went to the pool one day, and he saw my back and called my parents and said, ‘You know, something's really wrong. You have to get down here.’”

Nick Jonas also spoke about the early symptoms of the illness and how a lack of awareness about type 1 diabetes made him ignorant of the problem. He stated:

“I started losing a ton of weight, and you know, drinking a ton of water, using the bathroom all the time, all the signs that I know are symptoms of type 1 diabetes.”

He continued to explain:

“I think it's actually a testament to kind of the lack of information and awareness there was around type 1 at the time. So I had no idea. I just knew that I wasn't feeling well and was losing all this weight”

Jonas added:

“I was feeling just awful. And anyway, so I went to the doctor, and normal glucose should be between 70 and 120 for a person not living with type 1 diabetes. Mine was like north of 900, which is obviously very high"

Nick Jonas acknowledges his “great doctors,” crediting them for managing his condition and allowing him to be discharged within a week of his diagnosis. He added that he has been living with the illness for twenty years now, which also coincides with the Jonas Brothers' twentieth anniversary.
