As if we weren't already aware of it, Lady Gaga shows us once again just how much of a romantic she is. In her new song, Blade of Grass, she narrates the beautiful story of the proposal she received from her fiance.
In a new interview, the Abracadabra singer talks about the creative process behind the song, and how a poignant moment with fiance, entrepreneur Michael Polansky, inspired Blade of Grass. Gaga's interview with Apple Music was published on March 5, and shared by Genius.
She shared in the interview:
"As a songwriter, you need life to inspire your writing, and if everything is promotion, then I'll write about promotion and I won't write about that special moment I shared with you where Michael asked me how I would want him to propose to me one day."
In the song, she sings:
"I've been so lonely in this field... Fightin' a battle with no shield... Come on and wrap that blade of grass"
In the Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, Lady Gaga said:
"The song was about a memory that I had of us standing in the backyard, and he said, 'When I propose to you, what am I supposed to do?' And I said, 'You can just wrap a blade of grass around my finger in the backyard. And I’ll say yes.'"
However, Lady Gaga said that the melancholic imagery and mood of the song was intentional, since the she has a bittersweet memory connected to the place. She elaborated:
"It was the memory of the past haunting me... I had a friend that got married in my backyard, who died of cancer.”
According to Rolling Stone, the pop star was referring to her friend, Sonja Durham, who tragically passed after battling cancer in 2017. She said:
"I was remembering that this happy moment was happening in a place where it was bittersweet."

Polansky proposed to Gaga with a green braided band resembling a blade of grass. With typical Gaga flair, there was a twist to the proposal: It took place on April Fool's Day, and he also got her a diamond ring.
Gaga spoke in the Apple Music interview about how her relationship with Michael Polansky and her engagement helped her rediscover her creative origins. She said:
"At a certain point, I was into the idea of fame and artifice and being the conductor of your own life when it came to your own inner sense of fame."
She added:
"I had to fight a lot harder to make music and dance a little bit later into my career because my life became so different that I didn’t have as much life around me to inspire me."
The 38-year-old singer went on to say that although her admirers may have questioned why she chose to move away from the spotlight, she felt that it was time to start over. She said:
"I needed to go live life to have a full life and also to give back to my true gift."
Blade of Grass is a part of Mayhem, Lady Gaga's first full-length pop album since 2020's Chromatica. The release of the entire 14 tracklist is highly anticipated by fans.
