KCON LA has been part of the KCON roster since 2013, the second year of KCON as an event, while the first KCON was held in 2012 in Irvine, California. The first three editions of KCON Los Angeles were held at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.
The next four editions of the event were held at the Staples Center, with the 2019 edition featuring activities in both the Staples Center and the Los Angeles Convention Center.
The event has been held at its present venues—the Crypto.com Arena and Los Angeles Convention Center—since 2022, with the 2024 edition also featuring activities at Gilbert Lindsay Plaza.
KCON LA has previously featured performances by artists such as Dynamic Duo, Golden Child, Loona, NCT Dream, Taemin, Everglow, as well as Girls’ Generation, BTS, and more.
KCON was founded by CJ ENM Entertainment Division. The vision of the convention was elaborated upon back in 2018 by Angela Killoren, the Chief Operating Officer of CJ E&M America, in a statement to Forbes:
"We really had this dream, like it’s this festival. People come, they live it, they breathe it, they meet each other, they’re really excited, they’re fangirling here, eating stuff there, sharing hotel rooms, and then they go to an amazing concert at the end. That was the hope."
Killoren continued:
"When we started KCON in 2012, somebody told me ‘K-pop is over. You guys have already missed the boat. Come on, Girls’ Generation, BIGBANG, Super Junior that’s the biggest it’s ever going to get. They’ve already peaked. It was a true concern and actually KCON was a way to counter that."
She later added:
"It’s not just about trends but the core, creating a home for K-pop year in, year out. That should be what we do. Feeding that core fan and giving them that space even if the world outside is like ‘it’s over.’”
In addition to KCON LA, KCON has also had conventions in U.S. cities such as Irvine, California; Newark, New Jersey; New York City, New York; Chicago, Illinois; San Francisco, California; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Houston and Dallas, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia.
KCON has also hosted international editions in Japan, UAE, Spain, Italy, Germany, Thailand, Australia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Mexico.
KCON LA 2025 will be the second KCON edition of 2025, with the first being held in Japan from May 9 to May 11, 2025, at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
