Miley Cyrus, on the June 10, 2025, episode of the Reclaiming With Monica Lewinsky podcast, spoke about losing her role as the lead voice actress in the Hotel Transylvania film. The Wrecking Ball hitmaker revealed that she had been tapped to play the role of Mavis Dracula in the animated film produced by Sony but was ultimately dropped following a controversial photo involving herself and a cake shaped like a male private part.
The 32-year-old had made the cake as a joke for her then-boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth’s birthday.
Cyrus stated:
"I, as a joke, I got my boyfriend a penis cake for his birthday, and I got fired. I was the lead actress in Hotel Transylvania, and they fired me and replaced me because I had made an inappropriate adult joke. But I was 18.”
Sony Pictures, however, didn’t find the joke funny and had Miley Cyrus replaced by her fellow Disney star Selena Gomez. Gomez voiced Dracula’s teenage daughter in four films in the Hotel Transylvania franchise.
Miley Cyrus reveals that the p*nis cake photo was leaked after her camera and backpack were stolen at a party
Cyrus, while recalling the events that led to her being fired from her role in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, described the decision to fire her as ridiculous.
"What felt ridiculous to me about getting fired [over] a p*nis cake was that they sell p*nis cakes for all bachelorettes … in Nashville, Tennessee, you can get p*nis cakes. It’s not that big of a deal,”
She added:
"I thought this [was] a very simple, not vulgar joke … this is silly. You can do this for all bachelorette parties; they make necklaces and cups and straws and all kinds of stuff. It felt ridiculous.”
Miley Cyrus added that the p*nis joke was something girls her age did and was common during bachelorette parties.
The Hannah Montana star also revealed that she hadn’t leaked the private photo of her own accord, as the camera containing it was stolen alongside her backpack at a party.
“[It was] nothing I posted. I was at a private event at a private party, and I got robbed. It’s not cool.”
The singer first mentioned the lost deal with Sony Pictures in a 2019 tweet:
“I got kicked off Hotel Transylvania for buying Liam a p*nis cake for his birthday and licking it.”
While Sony hasn’t addressed the issue, a source reportedly revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Miley Cyrus was let go because the film giant was “nervous about the starlet leading a potential animated family-film franchise while shedding her Disney Channel image.”
