Natalie Merchant released her latest studio album, Keep Your Courage, in 2023. The album was her first new album, and she began writing it during the pandemic, soon after she had been through a major health crisis. The singer talked about the album in an exclusive interview with Line of Best Fit on April 21, 2023:

"It just seemed to make sense to me, after all that isolation. Whenever I’m in any kind of crisis, I play the piano. But I couldn’t even do that at the start of the pandemic because I couldn’t use my right hand for months. So when I say ‘keep your courage,’ I’m talking to myself as much as anyone."

The singer later talked about the song Guardian Angel from the album, talking about how it was written for a friend who lost her husband and two children in two years and how the song flips the notion of a guardian angel from someone protective to someone lazy and inattentive:

"When I think of her guardian angel, it’s more about neglect than about intending her to suffer. But you can certainly look at it that way, and the music certainly sounds that way."

The singer continued:

"The song starts with her in awe of her guardian angel, and by the end she’s threatening to kill it. There’s not a single electric instrument happening there, but I feel like that’s the rock and roll moment of the album.”

Alongside her solo music career, Natalie Merchant is also known for her years with the band 10,000 Maniacs. The singer started her career in the band, and the band achieved major success with albums like Blind Man's Zoo and Our Time in Eden.
