At the outset, let us clarify that NBA YoungBoy did not receive a key to the city of Atlanta.

The Mayor's Office, in a statement, has denied claims, noting,

"While we respect all individuals and agencies who choose to recognize cultural or community impact, the City of Atlanta and the Mayor's Office of Film, Entertainment, and Nightlife were not involved in this presentation. This recognition was made by representatives of Fulton County and the State of Georgia."

The statement further read,

"To be even clearer, the city of Atlanta has not provided a key to the City in a very, very long time and currently does not issue this commendation. We do hope everyone enjoyed the concert. This statement is issued simply to ensure accuracy and transparency surrounding public information."

According to videos circulating online, during a recent performance, NBA YoungBoy was joined onstage by Fulton County Probate Judge Kenya Johnson, Georgia State Representative Ingo Willis, and Fulton County Commissioner Martin Arrington.

As is being speculated, he reportedly received the key from Fulton County and the state of Georgia in recognition of his influence on hip-hop, his work on anti-gun violence initiatives, and other philanthropic endeavors.

According to Complex, the last time the City of Atlanta awarded a key to the city was in 2004 to Ludacris for his work with the Ludacris Foundation. Giving keys to a city is a symbolic honor that dates back to medieval times. It's a figurative gesture used by the city's mayor to recognize notable people for their achievements and contributions.
