On September 15, Ice Spice, during an appearance at Baby, This is Keke Palmer, praised Cardi B for opening doors for female rappers.
"I feel like Cardi B definitely brought back that hope (that) girls could rap, because for a long time, Nicki (Minaj) seemed so unattainable."
She also added,
"You know, that's part of the lore of why I was so obsessed because I'm like, 'Only she could do it."
After Spice's comments went viral on the internet, users took to Buzzing Pop's X post to express their opinion. While some users agreed with Spice, others slammed her and defended Nicki Minaj instead,
Another user (@mdSgmhSGmS6602) agreed with Spice and claimed that Cardi B's music is mediocre,
"Exactly Cardi opened the door for mediocrity!"
Another user (@CMPunkWWEFan) claimed that Spice meant that Cardi B's rapping is easy, while Nicki's isnt,
"She’s basically saying that Cardi rapping looks easy so she wanted to try 😂😂"
Another user came to Nicki Minaj's defense and credited her for breaking into the rap scene early. Nicki gained recognition in the 2010s as a female rapper, while Cardi broke out in 2016,
"Nicki started the journey first, she gave the foundational push to young ladies out there and not Cardi."
Another user (@biguniverseplus) claimed that Cardi's music is not untouchable as compared to Minaj's since she "lowered the bar for creativity.",
"bc CARDI doesn't write her own raps & NICKI always had to keep up with literally the best rappers of all time* CARDI made it so "anyone" could rap bc she lowered the bar for creativity"
While another user (@theshadyprint) credited Australian rapper Iggy Azalea for making a mark in the industry,
"Iggy had smash singles while nicki was the top female rapper…Some of Iggy’s song did better than Nicki’s so what do yall be talking about😭😭😭"
More about Ice Spice's relationship with Nicki Minaj
Ice Spice had collaborated with Nicki Minaj on 2023's Princess Diana (Remix) and again on Barbie World in 2024. While speaking to Rolling Stone in July 2024, Ice Spice acknowledged fallout rumors between the two and said,
"We don't have the closest relationship, you know? But we're definitely good. We're mutuals. We had smash records together. I love us together. I think the world does too."
This comes after Ice Spice's former friend leaked messages where she had ranted about working with Minaj on the Barbie soundtrack.
