Amaarae is making waves at Coachella this month.
Born Ama Serwah Genfi and formerly known as Petrah, the songstress made headlines just this month when she became the first artist of Ghanaian descent to headline a solo set at this year's Coachella.
This weekend, she returned to surprise fans with the debut performance of her unreleased track, Fine Shyt. During her previous set, she performed tracks by several notable Ghanaian artits, including Stables by Joey B, Sore by the Asakaa boys, Godzilla by La Même Gang, and Wengeze by Eazzy.
Here's all of Amaarae's achievements this month
Following a whirlpool of backlash online after her initial Coachella performance, the songstress took to X on April 14 to let the haters know she's on a mission to make Ghanaian music mainstream:
“Can’t please everybody unfortunately & usually, I don’t address this type of stuff but last night I gave my heart and soul to a cause I’ve worked towards my whole entire life and I’m elated w the result!!!! I’ve used my voice various other times & as always people don’t have all the info but it is what it is !!! Today on the biggest stage of my life I used my voice the loudest it’s ever been! I love Ghana no matter what so whether you hate it or love it… I’m still gonna rep it.”
Nonetheless, just this week, her debut album, The Angel You Don't Know, hit 500 million streams on Spotify, Album Talks has reported. The genre-defying project came out in 2020, though it has been steadily gaining traction since then. The album is also now officially the most streamed Ghanaian album of all time on the platform.
During another interview with Billboard that came out earlier this month, Amaarae reflected on what performing her new track on a stage as large as Coachella's was like for her:
"Man, it was incredible. I think the crowd responded really well. I’m excited to drop the new music. I’m excited for this new chapter. And it was insane. It was insane. Like the energy was nuts," she said.
As for how she prepared for the show, she said:
"You don’t prepare for Coachella. Coachella prepares for you. No, I feel like you just have to lock in mentally. Like, I’m not even kidding. There’s so many moving parts for the show. And I think, like, at some point I had to melt down a little bit."
When probed about how she tackles the nerves, Amaarae noted that it just gets "to a point where it’s like, you have to end up on that stage, and you have to give the people a show." Noting that for a show so "prominent," you "can’t, like, lose, you know, I can’t afford to lose. So it’s just lock that mind in and we just go. We just go."
At the time of writing, it remains unclear when Amaarae will drop Fine Shyt
