About the track Illusion
The single was released on April 11, 2024, from Dua Lipa’s third studio album Radical Optimism. Illusion stands out as the track produced by Caroline Ailin, Danny L. Harle, Tobias Jesso Jr., and Kevin Parker (Tame Impala), featuring live drums, synth-driven production, and an upbeat sound.
In an interview with Variety, Dua Lipa described Illusion as the “eureka moment” of the record’s sound:
“That was a song where I felt like lyrically, I got this radical optimism. I felt very strong in the moment when I was writing that song, because it was really seeing past someone’s bullshit, I guess, for lack of a better word. And understanding it for what it is and just entertaining it for the hell of it, even though you see what’s happening."
She continued:
"But I felt in a stronger power of position, because I was like maybe before, I would have fallen for something like this and now I can dance with the illusion, and it’s something for me too, you know?"
Dua Lipa added that as soon as Parker and Harle added drums, synths, and music breakdowns, she had something to play with. She mentioned that though Happy For You and Illusion are completely different songs, they were created in the same week and have a similar vibe.
To her, Happy For You sounded like a ballad, though she writes them. The song’s composition allowed her to be vulnerable and honest. She added that the creation process helped her develop as an artist. She concluded:
"That was just a moment for me to be really vulnerable and open and honest in what was happening in my life at that point. But I feel overall, in this whole record, I just grew as I was writing. I feel like I matured throughout.”
According to Dua Lipa, the song is all about:
“Knowing what you’re getting yourself into, but staying for the hell of it. The joke’s on them, it’s the fun of playing someone at their own game because ultimately you won’t fall for an illusion.”
After its release, it reached the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart, debuting at number 9. The song then went on to sell over 400,000 copies in the UK by March 2025, earning it a Gold Certification from the BPI.
As of now, the song has surpassed 300 million streams on Spotify.
The song is an absolute banger and continues to break streaming records. It shows no signs of slowing down.
