Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani became the topic of discussion after attendees of the 2025 AMAs shared on social media that their solo performances at the ceremony were pre-taped. Amidst this online discussion and debate, Shelton took to social media to respond to the criticisms and shared that they did what they were asked.

Blake Shelton is an American Country singer with songs like Austin, God's Country, etc. in his discography. He is married to American singer Gwen Stefani, whose popular songs include Hollaback Girl, Just A Girl, and more. The couple began dating about a decade ago and married in the year 2021.
Regarding the criticism against his and Stefani's solo performances, Blake Shelton wrote in his X account on May 27 that,
“Just now seeing these stories about Gwen and I pretaping our performances for the AMA’s. We came and performed when the show asked us to … Really nothing else to say.”
Stefani has not yet commented on the criticisms regarding their solo performances being pre-taped.
More details on the criticism against Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani.
According to E News, on May 26, during the AMA awards broadcast, Shelton performed his song, Stay Country or Die Tryin’, while Stefani performed Hollaback Girl, The Sweet Escape, Swallow My Tears, etc. The performance was probably nothing out of the ordinary for the audiences who watched the broadcast, but the live attendees reportedly had a different experience.
According to Rolling Stone, multiple people who attended the AMAs (held on May 26 at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas) shared on social media that the performances were played on screen, but the artists weren't there. According to E! News, some audience members wrote on social media that they felt "lied to" and were not informed that the performance was pre-taped.

Despite pre-taped performances being shown in live award shows reportedly being a common practice, few AMA attendees shared their disappointment via social media, as many expected a live performance. According to Rolling Stone, a TikTok user shared a video where Blake Shelton's performance was played on screen, but he was not on stage. The caption of the video read,
“When Blake Shelton is ‘performing’ at the AMA Awards but there is no Shelton in sight,”
According to Billboard, the two artists were not in attendance, and a source close to the production confirmed that they pre-recorded their performance before a live audience, before the ceremony. The publication further states that the broadcast did not inform in real time that the performance was pre-recorded.

Blake Shelton released his album, For Recreational Use Only, on May 9, 2025. The album also features a track with his wife and pop singer, Gwen Stefani, titled, Hangin' On. According to a People Magazine exclusive, they recorded two tracks together, but one is reserved for the next project.
