Rosé stopped by for a performance and a chat on the Howard Stern Show on Monday, Sept. 22. Unexpectedly, the BLACKPINK singer stole the spotlight when she pulled up her phone for a preview of her award-winning track "APT."
The entertainment radio show recently welcomed the K-pop superstar, who popped up in a sparkly black dress with her blonde tresses tied low. During the interview, Rosé talked about "APT.," her collaborative track with Bruno Mars that earned a total of seven nominations at the recent MTV Video Music Awards.
The songstress then offered to play the track's demo version, which Howard Stern agreed to with the same enthusiasm.
Giggling in her seat, Rosé's so-called "APT. 1.0" has a flirtatious vibe, contrary to the "APT." that was officially released in October 2024. The lyrics go:
"I'll be in the room in 17. Pick me from your favorite dream. We've been talking 7 days a week. But you can't hold my body through a screen."
Rosé continues singing:
"So you should leave your friends at the bar. The night's still young, I've got what you need. You can go and call yourself a car. Don't tell anyone you'll find me at the APT."
Still, despite its contrasting theme from the official drop, Howard Stern smiled and nodded:
"That sounds good."
Rosé reveals how "APT." came to life, credits Bruno Mars for the song's success
Rosé also dished on the story behind "APT.," telling Howard Stern the studio sessions that soon birthed the multi-awarded track.
"BLACKPINK kind of decided to take about a year off to do whatever we wanted to. And I flew out here. I had met somebody who was like, 'You know, let's just try some sessions.' And we were just at the studio 'til, like, midnight, past midnight, over McDonald's."
The "number one girl" hitmaker recounted how the sessions led to a drinking game, and how the drinking game led to recording, and the rest is history.
"I was teaching the boys how to play this drinking game, and they were so obsessed with it. It's just this chant, and there was like this, 'Apt, apt.' And they kept doing it all night. So, it was like a joke. We were like, 'We should make a song out of this,' because, you know, they seem to love it."
Rosé further credited her collaborator, Bruno Mars, for "knowing the assignment" as soon as they began recording "APT."
"Without him, I don’t know if I would’ve believed in this as much as I could, 'cause he just kind of understood it. He took it and he just knew what to do with it. I'm still in shock with what he's done with it, and that collaboration process is just kind of like a movie in a dream."
"APT." would then earn nods and accolades from multiple award-winning bodies. In 2024, it won the Song of the Year award from the Asia Artist Awards and Best Collaboration from the Asian Pop Music Awards.
Beyond Asia, the track scored the Arts & Entertainment, Social Video Short Form (Social) awards from the Webbys, and most recently, the Song of the Year trophy from the MTV Video Music Awards.
The recognition also marked Rosé as the first-ever K-pop artist to win the title in VMA history.
