Clairo hit a major milestone recently as her song "Bubble Gum" has officially reached 2x Platinum in the United States. This is a first for the singer-songwriter, whose breakthrough song, "Bubble Gum," was released more than a decade ago.

On 25 July 2025, Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) updated the song's certification status, recognizing over two million units in combined sales and streaming platforms.

Clairo's journey from SoundCloud to 2x Platinum

"Bubble Gum" started out as a simple bedroom recording by Claire Cottrill, who was then 15 years old with the stage name Clairo. It was first released on SoundCloud on February 15, 2015. Speaking about it in an interview with Beats 1 in 2019, she said:

"I think the first song I wrote that really meant a lot to me was “bubble gum.” I wrote that when I was 15. That was the first song of mine that actually “blew up”.

Under her true name, the song was featured on both her debut album, Metal Heart (May 2015), and her sixth EP, Late Show (March 2015). It was Clairo's first feature on her debut playlist, Originals. The song wasn't accessible on mainstream streaming platforms until February 21, 2019, when it was re-released with its B-side, Sis, despite its early underground popularity.

Clairo announced at the time on X:

”'bubble gum' and 'sis' are finally on streaming .. all the love”.

Clairo explained that the song comes from a place of regret. The chorus goes:

'Cause I swallowed the bubble gum /Oh, and these seven years will be pretty dumb/ Pink flowers grow from my skin/ Pepto Bismol veins and I grin.

"'Cause I swallowed the bubble gum" refers to the sensation of holding onto mistakes, as the regret tends to linger. The song, which once came from a place of regret, is now what turned her from a bedroom pop artist to a certified icon who performs on the big stage, as big as Bedstock. The singer announced on X in 2017 (back then Twitter) that she would be performing in bed for the Children’s Cancer Association’s Bedstock:

"Hi guys! today i'm performing in bed for kids who are stuck in theirs for @CCAJoyRx's Bedstock. Go to http://Bedstock.com to see the full lineup! Show your support."
