Dalton Gomez's new girlfriend, Maika Monroe, is seemingly throwing shade at Ariana Grande.

In one of her latest posts on Instagram, a photo of Ariana Grande's former husband and his new beau, a fan commented a reference to the former's song, Twilight Zone:

"she's still waiting [telephone emoji]"

The lyrics being referenced are:

"Does she know you're not who you say you are? "Cause I might give her a call."

Maika Monroe liked the comment, which eagle-eyed fans wasted no time in clocking, prompting them to flock to social media to speculate and opine. Here's how one snarky fan commented, for instance:

"ended her."

For the unversed, Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez began dating in January 2020, and not long after, they got engaged, and by the following year, they were married. They tied the knot in an intimate ceremony at the songstress's home in Montecito, California, though three years later, they filed for divorce. By March 2024, they finalized their divorce.

Here's how other fans are reacting on X:

"we don’t care. if they both were competent enough, they’d know the lyric was reffering to HERSELF. she’s taking to her past self. NOT that man’s current girlfriend," someone defended Grande.
"the said man couldn’t handle ariana’s fame, yet both he and his girlfriend are using ariana for attention. interesting," another chimed in.
"ariana's got a new stan and she aint happy about it," one more claimed.
"she’ll never be ariana so let’s just move on," yet another snarky user penned.

The comments didn't end there:

"the audacity to shade ari smh.." someone dissed.
"the way the lyrics aren’t even about her…" another pointed out.
"Embarrassing to still think of your man's ex....... especially when it's been years......." one more chimed in.
"the lyrics is talking about ariana’s PAST SELF btw. if yall dumb enough to not comprehend," yet another asserted.

Everything we know about Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater's contentious relationship:

Ariana Grande made headlines after her split from Dalton Gomez, mainly because shortly after, news emerged that she was dating her Wicked co-star, Ethan Slater. The actor cum singer is most known for having played the titular role of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, which he nabbed a Tony nomination for.

Rumors that the two were dating emerged back in July 2023, months after Ariana Grande confirmed her split. At the time, an inside source told People Magazine that they got close on set when Ethan was still married.

“It was obvious on the set from early on … they were very sweet to each other and often seen laughing together.” The source added, “Everyone just thought they were both happily married, though, and didn’t expect them to end up dating.”

The report also pointed out that the pair didn't begin dating until Slater parted ways from his wife of four years and the mother of his child. By October, Us Weekly broke the news that Grande had moved in with her beau.

“Ethan informed his friends and soon-to-be ex-wife that he’s living with Ariana full-time in New York,” the insider told the outlet. “They’re really happy and really good for each other. All of her friends love him.”

Back in June last year, Ariana Grande's brother, Frankie, got candid about Slater during his visit to the Gurus Magazine’s #30Voices30Days launch party in LA:

“I love him, he’s a very sweet guy. I've been a fan of him ever since seeing him in SpongeBob [the musical],” he said at the time. “And I got to interview him when I was doing the SpongeBob SquarePants podcast. And the Broadway community is a tight-knit family.” He added, “He’s a great guy. Ethan’s a wonderful guy. He’s very sweet. He’s very, very, very sweet. I just, I adore him. Honestly I’ve always just said this, all I want is for my sister to be happy, and when she’s happy I’m happy. So, I’m very happy.”

Come September, speculations surrounding the pair had gotten intense. Critics online were accusing Slater of leaving his wife and child for Ariana Grande. However, the latter defended her beau when she spoke to Vanity Fair that month:

“The most disappointing part was to see so many people believe the worst version of it,” she said. “That was definitely a tough ride.” She went on, “There couldn’t be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him,” noting that she “will never go into certain details.”

Ariana Grande continued,

“No one on this earth tries harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for the people that he loves and cares about. There is no one on this earth with a better heart, and that is something that no bullshit tabloid can rewrite in real life.”

However, in a bombshell essay that came out on The Cut, Ethan's estranged wife, Dr. Lilly Jay, got candid about her marriage ending in December 2024:

“No one gets married thinking they’ll get divorced, in the same way we don’t board a plane expecting to crash. But I really never thought I would get divorced. Especially not just after giving birth to my first child and especially not in the shadow of my husband’s new relationship with a celebrity,” she wrote.

She allegedly accused him of leaving soon after they welcomed their first child, in addition to claiming that she had shifted to another country to support his career. She said that newfound motherhood left her disillusioned about the state of their marriage, hinting that the divorce blindsided her.

Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater never publicly addressed the essay, and the two have continued to support each other at public events and red carpets.
