Wicked star Cynthia Erivo is getting candid about running into Beyoncé at this year's Grammys after her performance.

During an interview with the LA Times, which came out this Wednesday, June 4, the actress reflected on her performance at the awards ceremony and Queen Bey's pleasant reaction. Erivo took to the stage on February 2 to perform Fly Me to the Moon with Herbie Hancock as an homage to the late Quincy Jones, who arranged the 1964 version of the track.

“They asked if I could do it, and I was like, ‘I can, but I’m not Frank,’” she told the outlet. "Frank did ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ how it was supposed to be done for him, so I had to find out how to do it for me." She added, “When I went out into the audience afterward, I bumped into Beyoncé. She was like, ‘You’re an alien, and I love it.’”

Here's everything Cynthia Erivo has been up to lately:

Cynthia Erivo has been making headlines for her forthcoming role in Hollywood Bowl's Jesus Christ Superstar, which drew an intense wave of backlash when it was announced this year.

During a recent interview with Billboard, the actress pushed back on the negativity as she reflected on what it's like for a Black queer woman to take on such a role:

“Why not?” she said of being cast for the role. “You can’t please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, ‘Oh, it’s a musical, the gayest place on Earth.’”

Erivo was announced as a member of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical, which is slated for August 1-3, back in February. The performer came out publicly back in 2022, on the cover issue of British Vogue. During her interview with Billboard, she attributed her decision to do so to her community.

“I think I was actively looking for those who were encouraged to be more themselves,” she said. “I can’t change a person’s opinion of me; if they want to feel some way, there is nothing I can do about that. But I was so excited about being able to at least be one more face where someone could say, ‘Oh, my God, she did it and can still do it. She’s still creating, she’s still making. So maybe I can also do the same.’ ”

Cynthia Erivo is expected to take to the stage to headline the closing concert for WorldPride in Washington, D.C., during Pride month, alongside Denial Is A River songstress Doechii.

“I want to encourage people to not decide to just tuck away and start hiding and not being themselves anymore, because that is exactly what they want,” she told Billboard. “The more yourself you are, the more you are in front of people who don’t necessarily understand, the better understanding starts to happen.”

Just this week, the British native dropped her second solo album, I Forgive You. According to ABC News, Cynthia Erivo said of her album:

“The meat of each of the pieces that you listen to is the voice. So that you can hear the lyrics, you can hear the song, you can hear the emotion in it. Everything you hear in there is real and tangible.”

During her interview with the outlet, Cynthia Erivo reflected on what this album means to her and what prompted her to jot down about forgiveness:

"This album is a collection of stories and songs that are both personal for things that are happening now, things that have happened in the past, and I think some of which I have had to forgive people for. And honestly, some of which I’ve had to forgive myself for," she said. "And I loved the idea of calling it this title, because it’s a simple concept, but not an easy one. And not one that we as humans are very good at, often."

Cynthia Erivo also told ABC News that she is "proud" of her work, noting that she has spent a lot of time and worked "really, really hard on it."

Cynthia Erivo, a Tony Award-winning performer, also made headlines when she took to the stage alongside her Wicked co-star Ariana Grande at the 97th Academy Awards to deliver a live rendition of the film's medleys. The performance came months after the press for the musical film dominated social media.
