Queen Latifah maintains a private life despite being a famous rapper and actress.

Recently, however, she was spotted with her son, Rebel, at a WNBA game in Brooklyn. Rebel was seen donning a New York Liberty jersey with 'Equality' written on it.

The 55-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dana Elaine Owens, has one child, her son, Rebel, with her longtime partner, 47-year-old choreographer Eboni Nichols. The family of 3 usually avoids the spotlight, but the mother-son duo was recently seen at the WNBA game, Connecticut Sun vs. New York Liberty game at Barclays Center on August 25, 2025.

Latifah told SF Gate in 2008:

“I will probably be six months pregnant before anyone knows about it and I won’t talk about the baby until after it’s born.”

And she did, it wasn't until the 2021 BET Lifetime Achievement Award, when she revealed that she had a son in her acceptance speech. She concluded with:

“Eboni, my love. Rebel, my love.”

When did the Queen of Rap, Queen Latifah, become a mother?

After dating for almost a decade, Queen Latifah and Nichols reportedly welcomed Rebel in 2019.

When Rebel was 4 years old, he made his first public appearance by going to a Harlem Globetrotters game in Brooklyn with his mother, Queen Latifah. He has since accompanied her on a few occasions, such as the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, when they supported the Team USA swimming team while he was seen wearing a Lakers jersey and a Nike headband.

Speaking to E! Online, the Queen of Rap shared in 2016 that she has always dreamed of being a mother:

“I think I’m ready. I can’t say what God has for me, but you will see. You’ll see when I’m lugging the baby on the hip that there is actually a youngin’ around here.”

She also told People Magazine in 2019 about her wish to have a big family, saying:

“I’ve always envisioned myself with a big family, I’m a late bloomer. I’m a late bloomer with a lot of things and you know - nobody’s perfect. I’m an overachiever in some ways and just like slow as molasses in other ways. I think I kind of needed to grow and mature and get everything kind of taken care of with everything before I was able to really deal with it."

Queen Latifah dedicatedly took care of her mother, Rita Owens, who was diagnosed with a heart illness in 2005. She learnt a lot from this role, which made motherhood easier for her as she told People Magazine:

"As a caregiver - it’s just like being a parent, like some things really don’t matter."

She added:

“All the kind of frivolous things sort of fall to the side because there’s something way more important than all that. And when we go through these things together as a family, I realize, these are the important things, these are the important moments.”
