Megadeth has confirmed that their upcoming studio album will be their last. This will be officially the end of more than four decades in heavy metal.
Alongside the album, the band will launch a global farewell tour in 2026. This will be the last chance for fans to see Megadeth perform live. Frontman Dave Mustaine announced the decision to the group's fan base. He stated that the choice was intentional and on the band's own terms.
Megadeth's album will be released via Mustaine's Tradecraft in partnership with Frontiers Label Group's new BLKIIBLK label. The album title has not yet been revealed. However, its first single will drop in the fall of 2025. Pre-orders are set to open on September 27, 2025.
The farewell announcement followed a week of speculation after Megadeth posted a countdown clock on their website. It featured lyrics from their 1990 track Holy Wars… The Punishment Due. When the timer hit zero, a video of the band's mascot, Vic Rattlehead, confirmed the farewell plans, stating,
"Forty years of metal forged in steel ending in fire."
In his farewell statement, Mustaine said:
"Most musicians don't get to go out on their own terms on top, and that's where I am at in my life right now. I have traveled the world and made millions upon millions of fans, and the hardest part is saying goodbye. Don't be mad, don't be sad, be happy for us all, come celebrate with me these next few years."
Megadeth was formed in 1983 after Mustaine's exit from Metallica. Alongside Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, the band is recognized as one of the "Big Four" of the genre. The band's second album, Peace Sells… But Who's Buying? (1986), brought critical acclaim. The current lineup features Dave Mustaine on vocals and guitar, James LoMenzo on bass, Teemu Mäntysaari on guitar, and Dirk Verbeuren on drums. Mäntysaari joined in 2023 to replace guitarist Kiko Loureiro.
