Rapper and actor, Ice Cube, aka O'Shea Jackson Sr., found himself stuck in his hotel in Australia due to Cyclone Alfred. As per the latest updates by The Guardian, it is predicted that the cyclone will reach southeastern Queensland near Brisbane in the morning of March 8, 2025.
Speaking to The Project on March 5, 2025, Ice Cube quipped that it was an unexpected adventure that he never thought he would experience. He said:
“I’m staying clear of it. It’s pretty cool. I haven’t been through a cyclone before. So, you know, I can check this off my bucket list for sure.”
The host then joked that they needed a correspondence in Queensland to cover the weather conditions and asked him if he was available for the job. Ice Cube responded:
“You know, I’m right here on the beach. The beach looks like it is going to be in the lobby in a minute.”
The host mentioned hearing that the rapper was looking for fans to feature on his recent remix single. When asked whether he would be looking for talent in Melbourne and Sydney, Ice Cube replied in the affirmative. He added that they were always looking for the next superstar, saying they “gotta be a star waiting to be discovered.”
Concerning Cyclone Alfred, this marks the first storm of its magnitude to hit the area in decades. Authorities have instructed residents from Broadbeach to Jacobs Well and South Stradbroke Island to seek shelter immediately. Heavy rainfall and flooding are expected to persist even after the winds weaken.
Ice Cubes weighs on the essence of hip-hop music in the context of Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s rivalry
Discussing his Melbourne and Sydney shows with Today on March 6, 2025, Ice Cube shared that he would bring the West Coast vibe with him, performing hits from his four-decade music career, including tracks from his time with N.W.A. When asked about the cyclone situation, he replied:
“Oh man, it’s lovely. I mean I am on the Gold Coast so we got a cyclone moving in on us but other than that, everything is great.”
The rapper emphasized the importance of delivering a great performance and respecting the time and money fans spend to attend. He criticized modern rappers who rely on the crowd to sing most of the songs, stating that true MCs should give their all on stage. When asked about the ongoing feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, Ice Cube said:
“You know, it’s cool. You know, when hip-hop first was invented and brought to light in the 70s, it was to stop gang violence. It was to stop fights. You know, it was kind of like, you know, use your tongue, you know, kind of like a great debate. Use your tongue to subdue your opponent and so that’s part of it.”
On rap rivalries, he said they are part of the game as long as they stay non-violent. Reflecting on his Straight Outta Compton days, Ice Cube recalled having fun, traveling the world with friends, and pushing back against critics who didn't understand or appreciate their music.
