On June 20, 2025, Karol G's fifth studio album, Tropicoqueta, was released. This was a new and exciting period in the life of the Colombian celebrity. The cover for the announcement is bright and colorful, like the famed Tropicana nightclub. The playlist has twenty songs, including merengue, vallenato, cumbia, bachata, and mariachi.
Karol G said this about the project: "I feel super Latina" is the mantra that drives every sample, rhythm, and collaboration on this ambitious album. The publication of Tropicoqueta would be followed by an impressive performance.
On June 16, a trailer for Karol G's self-directed short film, which is also a promotional video for the album, was released. It looked like a Mexican soap opera, with dramatic lighting and over-the-top villainy.
Karol G talks about her new album 'Tropicoqueta'
The work on Tropicoqueta started while Karol G was still on her record-breaking Mañana Será Bonito Tour in August 2023. While traveling over Europe, Latin America, and North America, she rediscovered her love for the rhythms of her upbringing and had the idea to mix them with her reggaetón edge.
She recorded for Bichota Records and Interscope from 2023 to 2025, trying to be real by going back to the songs and styles she liked as a youngster. Karol G released "Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido" and "+57," both of which were released as solo singles while he was on tour.
Tropicoqueta plays coquettish tunes that tinkle with a rainbow of Latin styles. The album starts out with respectful references to mariachi and mambo, then moves smoothly into energetic cumbia villera and tropical merengue, and finally ends with sad vallenato balladry.
The two pre-release songs "Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido" and "Latina Foreva" showcase the album's twin themes of vulnerability and pride. Mazzarri and Misha co-produced the second track, which samples "Dile" by Don Omar and throbs with nostalgia for the early 2000s, while the first track is a mid-tempo reggaetón ballad that delves into themes of regret and lost ties.
During an interview with Rolling Stone, Karol G said,
“Latina Foreva is about all the aspects of being Latina—our curves, the way we’re the life of the party, and how everyone in the world wants to be with a Latina. I feel like the energy we carry has just been contagious.”
A 20-song track list was progressively unveiled on enigmatic billboards throughout Bogotá, Miami, and Madrid in the days before release, enacting a treasure hunt for fans.
Karol G cements her place as a pioneer in the history of Latin music by making Tropicoqueta a playful album that pays homage to her tropical roots. The record not only makes her a world-famous reggaetón queen, but it also makes her a protector of Latin American music heritage.
With Tropicoqueta, Karol G has produced a musical tapestry that pays tribute to all the many Latin sounds and stories. It's more than just another reggaetón album. "I feel super Latina," she says, the phrase across the whole album. As the world spins to the rhythms of Tropicoqueta, Karol G's vision of Latinidad—bright, diverse, and unapologetic—becomes more colorful than ever.
