Doja Cat is refusing to accept the negativity surrounding the cover art of her newest album, Vie.
The songstress, whose LP drops this Friday, September 26, took to her social media account to issue an acknowledgment of the abysmal reviews of the Vie album cover, where she can be seen hanging down a parachute lodged in a tree.
"You can’t make me feel bad for a cover that has visceral meaning. The greatest armor is love and integrity. I forgive your harsh criticism but for me I won yet again for following my heart. If I was you I wouldn’t," she penned.
Here's everything we know about Doja Cat's forthcoming album, Vie:
Doja Cat, 29, debuted the album cover of Vie in a post on Instagram, and paired it with an explanation that read:
"Falling in love is putting trust in the hands of yourself and others. The yellow parachute represents curiosity, happiness, and adventure. Flying you towards new experiences and scenes, taking a leap of faith, and holding no bounds. The tree represents life and wisdom. Giving you a sense of safety within its branches, but the pain from the fall teaches you that those scratches can be healed. You don’t have to hit the ground. Love grows upward but more importantly down. It’s the roots that keep you steady. This is the cover of my album."
The Paint the Town Red hitmaker sat down for an interview with CBS News on Sunday Morning, where she reflected on the making of her fifth studio album. The Grammy-winning artist explained that she suffered from self-doubt in the past, but has since overcome it:
“I’m very proud of the music I’m making now,” Doja Cat shared with host Michelle Miller. “I’m very excited because it’s things I wasn’t able to do before.” She explained that in earlier years, she struggled with vocal runs and riffs, often joking her way through moments she did not feel ready for. “I used to pretend to sing and then I just sucked it up and stopped joking so much and took myself more seriously,” she added.
The album marks her first full-length project since she debuted Scarlet in 2023. As of this writing, details about the same remain largely scarce, though the songstress has touted it as an evolution of her skills as a lyricist and performer. During a recent conversation with V Magazine, Doja Cat explained that this album got her back in touch with her pop roots with nods to some 70s music.
"I wanted to play with that nostalgia by using these Lo-Fi sounds and samples and things that reminded you of something from your childhood, but it wasn't on the nose '80s," said Doja.
As reported by Complex, Doja Cat was deadset on finishing her album, forcing her to bow out of this year's Austin City Limits Festival. She explained her decision in a post on Instagram Stories:
"When I made the commitment, I didn't know exactly when Vie would be released," she wrote. "I've been working on finalizing the album, making videos, taking the time to put together an album campaign that I am really excited about, and it's become clear to me that I cannot give you guys the show you deserve within this time frame."
