Tank is slamming Aaliyah's posthumous new song.

The five-time Grammy nominee, who promised he would release the late R&B songstress's first official posthumous album last year, took to Instagram this week to clear the air about her new song, Gone, featuring Tank.

Blackground Records released the song earlier this year, though its music video came out just yesterday, August 1. Shortly after, Tank, born Durrell Babbs, launched a tirade on Instagram:

“The Aaliyah song you are hearing featuring myself, I did out of love for her. I had concerns and I expressed them. From the track to the vocals to the mix and to the visual,” he told his 2.1 million followers. “I still went forward knowing I would at least be able to approve the final products. I haven’t approved one thing you’ve heard or seen.”

Although he did not call the label out, he did assert that “Aaliyah deserves better," and that the song that came out was not up to the expectations of being “something good to preserve and continue the legacy of the amazing [songstress].”

As of this writing, the label has yet to respond to his statements.

Tank says he's grateful for being able to make a new song with Aaliyah again

As reported by The 360 Magazine, the song made its debut on May 2 on BLK Stream, and as of this writing, sits at #11 on the Billboard Adult R&B Airplay Chart. It has raked in over 7 million on-demand plays, and was reportedly co-penned by Static Major and Tank. Sean Garrett and Azul Wynter produced the track. Garrett said of the song,

“I felt like being a part of this “Gone” record was an amazing opportunity. Growing up admiring Aaliyah, who is such an icon, has completely been an inspiration for all of us. I could not have been more blessed to have made a record with her and Tank. Amazing voices and talent”.

At the time, a teaser was shared on social media, where Babbs could be heard saying:

“This song is an opportunity for me to say thank you to someone truly special. Thank you for the love. Thank you for the friendship. Thank you for who I am today. And thank you for this very moment because now I get to say I have a new song with Aaliyah.”

Aaliyah's death shocked the world when it occurred in August 2001. She was in the Bahamas at the time, where she and her team were shooting for what was to be the final music video of her single, “Rock The Boat.” She was 22 years old.

Some of her unreleased tracks rolled out via a compilation titled I Care 4 U in 2022, though Unstoppable, which is what Tank has been teasing, has yet to come out. It remains unclear just what the timeline of release is for this album.
