At 75, Stevie Wonder continues to take the stage with passion and purpose, and he has no plans of slowing down.

Fresh off his Songs in the Key of Life UK tour, which earned glowing reviews for its joyful energy and timeless sound, the music icon made it clear he isn’t considering retirement anytime soon. In a conversation on the BBC’s Sidetracked podcast, he said:

“For as long as you breathe, for as long as your heart beats, there's more for you to do. I'm not gonna stop the gift that keeps pouring through my body.”

Stevie Wonder also reflected on the nature of creativity, saying:

“I love doing what I'm doing. An artist never stops drawing. As long as you can imagine is as long as you are going to be creative.”

In the same interview, he confirmed that his long-discussed project, Through The Eyes Of Wonder, is still in the works. First mentioned in 2008, the album, described as a personal performance piece, would be his first studio release since 2005’s A Time To Love.

Before headlining BST Hyde Park, Wonder spoke about the enduring relationship he has with his music.

“Songs are like children, they're with you forever. They are statement from the spirit within you.”

He added:

“And singing those songs is like me taking another breath.”

“See people in the spirit”: Stevie Wonder responds to longstanding blindness speculation during Cardiff tour stop

Stevie Wonder’s Sidetracked podcast interview comes days after he addressed a persistent rumor that has followed him for decades: the claim that he isn’t actually blind.

Captured in fan-recorded footage from the July 9 performance, Stevie Wonder took a moment between songs to speak candidly to the audience, setting a warm, playful tone.

“I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking, ‘When did I want to let the world know this?’ But I wanted to say it right now.”

He referenced the rumor directly, adding:

“There were rumors about me seeing and all that. But seriously, you know the truth.”

Then came his statement: that clarified a great deal

“Truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind. Now, that was a blessing because it’s allowed me to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight. See people in the spirit of them, not how they look. Not what color they are, but what color is their spirit?”

The myth has often resurfaced in pop culture, sometimes with humor, as seen in Lionel Richie’s 2019 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where he joked:

“I’ve been spending my whole life with him thinking he can see. I know he can see.”

Stevie Wonder’s decision to finally speak on the rumor head-on, sprinkled with his signature humor, left fans in Cardiff with a moment as meaningful as any melody.
