Tim McGraw has reached a turning point in his life and wants his music and performances to be informed by that change. On a recent appearance on the TL's Road House podcast, the country music legend opened up about how, at this stage of his career, he prefers songs with a deeper message:

“I try to do fun songs every now and again. It’s harder the older you get to find a fun song and feel comfortable with it. You don’t want to sing about tailgates and bikinis when you’re 58 years old. Occasionally you do, if the song’s right.”

McGraw is clearly not trying to take the fun out of his persona as an entertainer, he is merely shifting his lyrical direction into one that has the potential to have a deeper influence on his audience’s lives.

The country music icon opened up about wanting to make songs that impart lessons, referencing two of his past hits in particular, Live Like You Were Dying and Humble and Kind.

“What song’s gonna make me learn something about myself? And what song can I sing that I interpret that’s believable? That’s the hardest thing.”

McGraw then spoke about his openness to experiment while doing his best to stay true to himself as an artist:

“I’m not always trying to experiment. But I think I have a base sound, a sort of base attitude about the kind of songs that I want to do. I’ll throw a fun ditty song in every now and then, I’ll throw a fun love song in every now and then, I’ll throw a fun cheating song in every now and then. But I’m always looking for a life-affirmation song.”

If a song does come across McGraw and he deems that it “skewed too young” for him, he now seeks comfort in the fact that he can pass the record on to his nephew and up-and-coming voice in country music, Timothy Wayne.

McGraw debuted with the single What Room Was the Holiday In, which was released in March 1991. In the time since, he has made a catalogue of memorable hits, alongside some truly incredible performances on screen in various roles, including The Blind Side and Friday Night Lights.

He married fellow country music sensation Faith Hill in 1996, and they are parents to three loving daughters, Audrey, Gracie, and Maggie.
